"The Procession of the Light Workers" By Freydoon Rassouli. The original colors have been modified by the author. An artistic portrayal of those souls - Light Workers - who bring light into the darkness.
Preface
"Love is the cure for every evil,
Love is the air that supports the eagle.”
-Lyrics from "Thieves Like Us" by New Order
TIME is a constant in the world in which live. We all live within it, and it carries us forward each day to that final moment when the human soul leaves the physical world, or one dimension of consciousness and expression, to the eternal and boundless state of existence. It is the "I AM that I AM" where all souls coexist consciously with angels, divine guides, and spirit-guardians. We live in the presence of the eternal sphere of God - our all-knowing and all-loving creator and Christ-Jesus; the Representative of Humanity. Some souls dread the moment of death loving the life that was led while others look upon that finality and transition as a blessing - a release from the pain of life.
The world of the spirit permeates all things. All living beings are spiritual beings of light incarnating in a physical form only for a limited time. Birth, live, death, and rebirth or eternal facts of the universe. TIME, while a constant that moves forward in the physical world and is immutable, does not exist in traditional terms in the world of the spirit. There, the world is timeless on reflected in SPACE; distances between souls based on one's degree of advancement and spiritual maturity. These spaces are separated only by perception, feeling, deeds, and events that are reflected in the state of a living being.
These dispositions are the result of deeds, thoughts, and feelings which were expressed in varying ways over the course of many lifetimes. Has the soul conquered their inner dragon? Are they still married to a more selfish - and therefore sinful - life which inhibits their progression? There, between the period of death and rebirth, millions of souls prepare for future lifetimes - and missions - while maintaining some measure of connectionalism with those in the physical world. Just how many people in the world are aware of these living spiritual relationships is unknown to the author, but these things are not frequently spoken of based on my experience.
Those who live in the world of the spirit, having passed through the membrane of death, look upon their prior lifetimes, which have come to an end, as a departure that led to a rebirth in the world of spirit. Although painful to leave loved ones behind oftentimes, physical death is viewed by those in spirit-land as a marvelous rebirth. A soul, every moment of the day, is coming home to God and the source from whence all things in the universe came forth. Souls in the spirit-world look back upon their prior lifetimes and how decisions and outcomes of those incarnations have led to a current and potential future state of being.
Those who live in the world of the spirit are not confined by the limitations of intellectual thought; they live in a communal environment where thoughts, feelings, and ideas are expressed as images, symbols, and ideas that can be immediately perceived by others. Thoughts are the primary means of communication. Words are superfluous and only used when they wish to communicate with those of us still here in the physical world.
They are beings of light now who shed their lower aspects during a transition from one sphere to the next that occurred over the course of several years. Dr. Steiner described this purgatorial phase as "kamaloca" and lasts about 1/3 of the lifespan of the individual while on earth. What is projected onto someone else in thought or feeling is immediately experienced by the soul who projected this or that feeling, idea, or sentiment in the world of the spirit. This reality, while invisible to people in the physical world, is nonetheless a fact and we are connected to them as much as they are to us.
The veil that blocks a person's perception of the world of the spirit is a mystery in the modern world with most persons refusing to believe or try to attain to a genuine vision of the spirit which can be attained through practice, patience, and education. Becoming a bridge to the spiritual worlds is fundamental to the path of spiritual initiation. Meditation and constructive focused concentration is the to the inner self. It is the key to attaining supersensible vision. This threshold in the Grail Mysteries is referred to as "Parsifal" or "part the veil." Until the veil is pierced by a seeker who lives in the physical world, we follow our soul impulses most of which are hidden or at best partially revealed by the events of our lives. They come to life in our dreams in veiled forms. Until one seeks these hidden facts of our life through the Mysteries, the laws of destiny and karma remain an ambiguous concept that the uninformed describe as "luck", "fortune", and "fate."
This is a good thing for many who wish to avoid the realities of the struggle of the human being, and a challenge to be overcome by those on the PATH who know - even if they cannot see it - that the spiritual worlds are a very busy and active place. We all have a destiny and a place within it. Some are driven by an insatiable drive to see into the spiritual worlds and observe the hidden processes behind birth, life, death, and history. Most have a desire to share their results with others to spread the good news of the spirit.
This quest is the journey to spiritual initiation; the expedited change of the human being within the soul and spirit so that one may become a bridge to the spiritual worlds. Until the experiences of life can be viewed in light of the facts of the spirit revealed through Mystery Wisdom - such as we find in Anthroposophy and the teachings of a genuine spiritual initiate - life will always carry a mystery within it which cannot be reconciled. The world of the spirit remains hypothetical. Genuine religions have provided us with details about some, but certainly not all, of the divine beings who shape and oversee the evolution of the world in which we live and do not incarnate in the physical world.
Countless people across the world have spiritual experiences every day and many refuse or are not informed enough to perceive these things. Some do not recognize experiences as spiritual in nature while others, for example, who have had near-death experiences return with vital information and details regarding the reality of the world of the spirit. They often tell those who will listen of marvelous experiences including just how important it is not to forget and to embrace ideas, practices, and perspectives that enable us to become better human beings. They tell us that we must not disregard the spirit in the human being and the world as something unknowable.
The vocabulary and insights that Dr. Rudolf Steiner brought to humanity were defined by genuine and objective spiritual observations that can only be perceived through far-reaching and piercing spiritual vision of a spiritual initiate. Some of the terms and perspectives he utilized to convey spiritual facts are not commonly used in used in everyday life, yet they are not difficult to understand with a bit of time and effort. It is essential for a person in today's world to embrace the possibility and reality of the hidden and spiritual-cosmic aspects of life as more than just religious ideas. They are living aspects of the human being interwoven within us and the universe.
A valid spiritual vocabulary, not rooted in superstition and ambiguity but rather details and facts, enables a genuine perception of things to be cultivated. It also allows a common vernacular to be adopted so that an observer or one who experiences the world of the spirit on the path of life can define and better understand the processes, constructs, and inner (and outer) experiences of the human being. It enables one to approach the mystery of the spiritual world - from whence we all came prior to being born and to whence we shall return upon death - and the spiritual intelligences who eternally influence each other and the world in which we live in dynamic and evolving ways.
Dr. Rudolf Steiner, founder of Anthroposophy, informed his students that the human being and the cosmos are complex. We consist of both visible and invisible aspects (that is until one develops a faculty to see these things). One cannot observe all of the aspects of the human being by outer means, thus as one makes their way down the "path", and ever-so gradually, perception and knowledge expand and we see things in new ways that were previously hidden. As one incorporates true knowledge and a genuine striving to the spirit, which permeates all things, into one's soul - whether it be scientific, social, or theological - one's vision and consciousness expands.
Every human being in the world is passing through inner spiritual changes, including meeting our karma, whether we are aware of it or not. We are all passing through stages of change by the path of life. One does not need advanced knowledge of religion, science, or esoteric wisdom to progress as the path of life always leads us on and on...but it is essential for those who seek to solve the riddles of birth, life, death, and the inner meaning of things to find a reliable path to a vision of the universe. In the ancient world, this vision was cultivated in "Mystery Centers" where the most qualified candidates were led to the expedited process of inner change referred to today as "spiritual initiation."
However, to seriously consider and approach the process of deliberate and expedited spiritual change one needs to be informed on the meaning and significance of the obstacles, aspects, and challenges of the PATH. Only the initiates can convey this to the world properly. Otherwise, an earnest seeker has no framework or background upon which to consider and reflect upon the inner and outer experiences of life through the eye of the spirit in an informed way.
There are many mysteries on the path of life and many of us do not feel compelled to look any deeper. That is a part of our free will and we each reserve the right to approach things when we are ready...or when the tides of destiny compel us to a sudden and traumatic transformation point. However, once a person begins a genuine path of education and change, images, reflections, and ideas emerge in the life of the individual that were previously concealed.
Anthroposophy, initiation wisdom, past-live hypnotic regressions, and near-death experiences almost always communicate that there was a plan for our lives, with specific goals, that was implemented for each individual prior to being born by divine guides. Each of us agreed to this plan, but most of us have long since forgotten. We are not always successful, or maybe only partially successful. The drive to pursue a certain career, marry a certain person, do this or that, is a soul impulse that works through our "ego." However, one must learn to differentiate between the "lower" aspects that can mislead us and the "higher" aspects of ourselves that descend into us from GOD and the spirit that leads us along the right path in life.
Only until our lower elements, or aspects, are exposed, confronted, and transformed can a true human being address and correct them. Until the moment that these lower aspects are brought to a person's attention, they cannot be corrected and they influence a person in the wrong way. They cause harm to ourselves and others. The aspects of our true inner character, which are were planted within ourselves in past and current lifetimes, becomes visible through an awareness of our lower aspects, but also during moments of clairvoyance, mediation, inner and outer experiences, and one's dream life.
Some aspects of the soul manifest in varying intensities, but some remain hidden and latent until we bring them forth or life reveals them to us. The famous 20th century Psychologist Dr. Carl Jung, who worked diligently to pierce the riddles of the human being, referred to this mysterious region of the human being as the "subconscious." Dr. Rudolf Steiner - as a modern initiate - observed that the varying aspects of the human soul, and the human being, are discernible in greater detail.
The embodiment of a human being's darker aspects, which can be separated from the human being during the first steps of initiation and brought to a conscious level so that they can be purified, has come to be known as the "double", "doppelganger", or "shadow." This term has long since been used for the candidates for initiation ("probates" in Anthroposophical vernacular) who were once trained in ancient Mystery Centers which have faded into the past.
Carl Jung referred to this part of the soul and human being as “the thing a person has no wish to be.” (Carl Jung, Collected Works, Vol. 16, Paragraph 470) Dr. Jung stated quite correctly that...

"Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one has always a chance to correct it. Furthermore, it is constantly in contact with other interests, so that it is steadily subjected to modifications.
But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected. It is, moreover, liable to burst forth in a moment of unawareness. At all events, it forms an unconscious snag, blocking the most recent attempts. We carry our past with us, viz: the primitive and inferior man with his desires and emotions, and it is only by a considerable effort that we can detach ourselves from this burden.
If it comes to a neurosis, we have invariably to deal with a considerably intensified shadow. And if such a case wants to be cured it is necessary to find a way in which man's conscious personality and his shadow can live together."
- Carl Jung, Psychology and Religion (1938). Author's Note: The initiate has purified the shadow to a very, very high degree over the course of many lifetimes. These statements point to a lower aspect that has NOT been purged or purified.

The "double" is not a conceptual or ambiguous idea. It is a living spiritual reflection of ourselves that follows us from one lifetime to the next but remains invisible until it manifests itself in thoughts, feelings, and deeds in the physical world. It can only be observed in any outward way clairvoyantly in the colors and forms that reside within and radiate out of each living being through an expanded form of consciousness where some measure of a supersensible vision has been attained. In Buddhism as "Samskara." Everything within us that us that is untransformed. They are living imprints and "echoes" carried forth from all of our prior lifetimes that is imprinted in the soul of a person.
The manifestation of the double are the "neuroses" for Carl Jung and the "dragon" that was prevalent in medieval art. It is the dark untransformed aspects of our souls that find its way - in its many variations - from the depths of the soul, or "unconscious" for Carl Jung, through our thoughts, feelings, words, ideas, impulses, drives, and dispositions that are primal and not spiritual in nature.
The "shadow" lives in each of person's unique streams of karma and the negative aspects life. They confront us as life experiences through the karmic necessity for us to face other people on the path of life, our professions, addictions, vices, and anything lowly within ourselves that is primal in nature. The "shadows" exist alongside the light" or higher forces in the human being; higher spiritual forces.
Thus...
"Until we make the unconscious, conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." -Carl Jung
And,
“We meet ourselves time and again in a thousand disguises on the path of life.” -Carl Jung

There is a great deal that remains hidden from the eyes of a human being in the depths of our souls. The revelation of these shadows occurs through awareness, perspective, clairvoyance, and the events of life. They are also observable through active and clear dreaming when the deeper and hidden forces of the soul come to life outside of us in dreams as symbols, images, feelings, interactions, and scenarios that play out before our Ego from the first and third person perspective.

The candidate for initiation, which is a managed and expedited process of change overseen by divine guides must pass through a stage where this negative "counter-image" is brought before the candidate and animated so that these corruptions can be corrected. Otherwise, initiation cannot occur without illness or even death. They come under our control when we seek the truth of things; we must become harsh critics of and the manifestations of lower urges, desires, and feelings which leads us to strengthen our willpower and thus control our thoughts and feelings. We must acknowledge and control them before they grab hold of us and lead us into folly!
While not essential, it may help to review the page The 7 Aspects of the Human Being on this website which is entirely based on Dr. Steiner's works for the backbone of how the human being is constructed and how it he or she becomes transformed gradually over time. The general principles of spiritual initiation are described in various places throughout this website, which were delivered by genuine initiates in the modern world. Dr. Steiner lectured and wrote widely on the subject, and a basic search on the term "initiation" or "initiate" at www.rsarchives.com will result in many hits to help a researcher along.
The following tale is conveyed, at least in part, using Anthroposophical vernacular that brings to clarity the various aspects of the human being as he or she proceeds down the path of initiation in the modern world. Like all writers, I do not know exactly why I felt an overwhelming impulse to undertake this story. Writers follow our hearts and interests and we learn as much as anyone else does during our writing. I do not know precisely where these words came from, but they flowed through my soul and into my mind as if I was being led along a path for not just my benefit, but the benefit of others in the future.
In addition to Dr. Rudolf Steiner, whom I consider the most informed authority on the subject of initiation and the mysteries of the human being in the 20th century, are other genuine seekers who have written insightful works on the quest of initiation including Elizabeth Haich (author of the book Initiation which is available to download on this site on the Free Works page and the internet), Edgar Cayce founder of the Association of Research and Enlightenment based in Virginia Beach, Va., Dr. Walter Johannes Stein, Dr. Ita Wegman, Marie Steiner-von Sivers, and those who helped to found the Anthroposophical Society and carry on its mission. Rudolf Steiner's works are available for free on www.rsarchive.com.
This tale is not fictional. It is a record of real events of one individual who passed through an early and difficult stage of spiritual initiation in the modern world. It was difficult because of the uniqueness of this individual. Everyone's journey is unique.
Names used were improvised by the author based on my experience and interests and do not necessarily reflect the real identity of a person who was a part of these traumatic and necessary experiences. The purpose of this unique tale is simple. It is to help others on the path and provide another example of spiritual experiences and the path by which these experiences came into being.
It is absolute fact that this tale could have been framed or cast in a conveyable way without the reference and background of Dr. Rudolf Steiner's body of information and knowledge including the Esoteric Lessons. These lectures, books, and articles provided invaluable assistance in understanding the process at work in the spiritual worlds for people who pursue the deliberate and expedited path of spiritual growth through the informed path of spiritual initiation.

I: Pattern Recognition
“The spiritual, like the terrestrial life, has its beginning, its apogee, and its decline.
When this life is exhausted (the life between death and rebirth),
the soul feels itself overcome…
An invincible force once again attracts it to the struggles of earth.
This desire is mingled with a terrible dread and mighty grief
at leaving divine life. But the time has come; the law must be obeyed.
The heaviness increases, the sensation of dimness is felt.
The soul no longer sees its companions of light…
Then with solemn oaths, it promises to remember –
to remember the light in the world of darkness,
and to remember the truth in the world of falsehood…”
- Edouard Schure, Pythagoras and the Delphic Mysteries. Third Degree – Perfection. This is an abridged quote.

In the beginning was the echo of the past; the loss of memory. As a child, and throughout his life, John felt deep pangs of regret and yearning that filled him with sad and mournful emotions. This ineffable longing of his heart frequently brought him to tears during private moments. Intense feelings of love, separation, conflict, and decisions - which can never been taken back and were filled with longing - somehow resounded within him.
It was always there. Life permeated these echoes of the heart, which were alive, with intensity as he grew older. Frustration followed with those who did not appear to feel anything or had little, or no, enthusiasm for things. As he grew older and forgetfulness set in, his determination to find the answers to his dreams, which included mysterious events of the past, compelled him on.
Sometimes, these feelings amplified into an overwhelming and isolated sense of grief. Then, there were moments accompanied by a feeling as if he lived amongst familiar strangers...and a feeling that something very personal had been stolen, or lost, away from him. John's past appeared before him throughout life - and he sensed it - through people and events that he recognized as being, somehow, personally connected to him.
Some of these experiences brought warm feelings and a sense of friendship. Others brought antagonism and challenges to be overcome. Oh, it is "him again", John said to himself on occasion, or "I remember her from somewhere", having never met her before. Memories flashed before him in dreams, visions, places, decisions, events - sometimes mundane and innocuous - and faces of those he encountered. Each of them reflected changes that were forever cemented, and lost, in time.
John's life, like everyone's, was just one dot amongst dots in the world. He constantly reflected upon and questioned it. It was a life built upon what once was was, is, and shall be. It had a beginning and it was destined to end at some point. What then? He sensed it. He had the nerve once to ask his father, as a child, "what happens when we die?" His father, alarmed, told him not to worry about right now; that is a long, long way away. That simple fact and enduring feeling, which others sometimes ascribed to pessimism, plagued him. Simple and immature statements such as "you only live once", plagued him as curses of the blind and uninformed. Yet, he knew that his life was also important somehow and that seizing the moment was vital. But what was he to seize?
He sensed deep down that all of life, and individual lives, however insignificant they may appear or believe themselves to be, are vitally important to the world, the universe, and God. It was a living fact within him. Nothing is forgotten, everyone is important, and we strive to BE. He intuitively knew that death was not the end and people, as they were, continued and became something much, much greater after death.
John also sensed, although he did not talk about it with anyone ,that he had lived before as someone else in the past with a different name and family and that some, whose faces he could not see, that he had once known and loved were gone....as if they had been lost to time. Thoughts crossed his mind on occasion such as; "I wonder what happened to all of my belongings" or "I do not want to go to school AGAIN." Life, at one point, had taken on a redundant quality as something he had already done - and rather recently - and was forced to do again.
Like a vague memory that time but half erases, the past appeared anew, reborn out of the ashes of its former life. It sparked a hidden feeling in the depths of his soul. Loved ones once embraced with sincere and mutual affection were somehow torn away by the tides of destiny - and a fateful decision as he would eventually discover - and appeared out of the depths of the soul as feelings and vague visions. Eventually, through destiny and the advent of loved ones long gone, details would emerge.
Others appeared through the events of life; some of which were decisive, random, and peculiar. He inwardly sensed however, that someone very important was missing from his life. A hidden heartfelt pang drifted through his heart from time to time and painfully ached. It had no face, name, or identity. Sometimes, in his dreams, a face or event from the past would appear with no names, yet the scene - sometimes mundane scenes from past lives - sent pangs of love and yearning throughout the depths of his heart. He carried an inner wound that no one could see.
Some, but not all, of these faces were intimate and trusted companions that were forever altered and changed by decisions that he had made in the past - based on selfish and unselfish intentions - that bore an eternal mark upon his soul. Some were antagonists who, it seems, assumed an adversarial stance in his life for no reason whatsoever. Others showed bias, and favor, to him. All of these dispositions, as he discovered during his spiritual reading and reflection in life, had a precedent in past lives and were carried forward by karma.
Over time, things became clearer. He had LIVED before, he had been married before, and had died young violently in the throws of a desperate situation; of some kind. He remembered the emotional pain of being "torn out" of his life and forced to return to a new one. He had dreams of moving through a black void accompanied by a divine guide, filled with light and warmth, between light-filled areas where people were engaged in all manner of activities; rejoicing, discussion, and learning. He recalled that everything was peaceful but everything was also in movement. He recalled a sense of urgency that applied to him about his coming life; he had to get it right this time. Others were counting on him.
He remembered seeing angels and divine guide who ordered him to return to life. He recalled clearly seeing living churches, cities, communities, loved ones, and beautiful companions with whom he was personally connected who were preparing for their future lives together. There were smiles, discussions, laughter, and sadness at people parting ways knowing they would never see each other during their coming lives and, because of conditions beyond their control, would not remember each other as they walked a sometimes very lonely path in life. Some would have to pass through painful experiences and John swore to find and help them, if he could...
He remembered a spiritual church, made of white light, where a couple was emerging after taking their vows together having sworn a pre-life promise to be married prior to being born. He remembered the bride waving to him as if she knew him as he passed by, escorted by a divine guardian. He remembered the moment of being thrust back into the world, as a soul, and being reborn under the guidance, and insistence, of an angelic guide who bore the resemblance of an assertive and informed young woman.
Time moved on. John grew older and his life led him down a path of this and that; sometimes things happened that he regretted, and sometimes he felt as if he had accomplished something. Mistakes were made in life, and others made mistakes towards him. Sometimes, seemingly needless challenges emerged that he was forced to confront and accept. Sometimes he projected those things onto others. But always in the background was something pressing upon him, something he could not muster to his waking consciousness. He felt he was always falling short...
Years flashed before him; one after another. And each one was cemented into the past forever; unchangeable. Things began to emerge gradually, however, and in regular cadences which he did not always understand through his inner soul life. Companions, guides, and messages appeared to him through his dream life, and sometimes through a psychic ability as visions; visions of past lives - mundane and climactic moments alike - ideas that he had, and places that he visited. All of them were spawned on by the otherwise mundane path of life that was unique to him.
An informed path finally emerged. He learned of the path of spiritual initiation through books that he read. This lofty task as described by "initiates" was beyond his grasp, and he knew it, yet he seemed to understand it as something that he had familiarity with. Every time he found, and absorbed, some hidden piece of wisdom it changed his soul and dream life. Everything changed when, at a certain point, a dearest loved one died and transitioned to the spiritual worlds. A mission emerged as this loved one returned to guide and inspire him along. He first appeared in lucid dreams in John's dream life trying to get his attention every night...
From the spiritual worlds, through dreams, clairvoyance, and visions, loving companion emerged and led him to a decision gate; a gate where the names, faces, and living souls of those he had been separated through time, and who he sincerely loved, reappeared gradually over the course of time. This gate would stretch him to find his innermost tolerances. His deepest flaws would be the stuff of discussion and analysis by those closest to him.
His habits, deepest darkest secrets, and the flaws of his character would become a matter of great importance to his spiritual guides and companions and they would bring it to his attention every night, while he dreamed. He would be examined, reexamined, tested, retested, lectured, scolded, and hopefully propelled in a new direction for the sake of himself, an his closest companions, whose future destinies were intimately woven into his own.
He would be exposed to the painful facts and truths of the distant past, a past he had forgotten about. The longing regret and yearning of his youth would be resolved by the love of his soulmate, and a dearest companion, who reappeared out of the light and mists of the astral world; souls who had long since vanished into history pursuing their own paths of karma and yet longed to be reunited with him as well. They were guided to him to help him.
These loving and dedicated companions had been patiently and eagerly awaiting him to raise his consciousness high enough and to become informed enough through Anthroposophy and initiation wisdom - to perceive them in their true and objective form. When the moment arrived and John had made it a certain point of his life, his loved ones seized the moment.
The future appeared before him in visions and dreams and John's life, and perspective, were forever changed...
II: The Threshold
"It was my aunt, but she was so much more... The skin was almost alive; almost like alabaster with light behind it... I felt wonderful, like I could do anything."
- Abridged Quote from a woman as she described her deceased Aunt that she met during a near-death experience.

Above: "Soul Sisters" by Freydoon Rassouli. The original colors have been modified by the author.
Once an individual pieces the threshold between this world and the next, albeit through a near-death experience, meditation, a conscious waking bridge to the spiritual worlds, or visionary flashes that occurs randomly, one's life is forever changed. These experiences lead to a new perspective and renewed path for life. A feeling of urgency, inadequacy, and a mission that extends beyond the boundary of physical death, permeates all these experiences.
The spiritual path, when guided by initiation wisdom such as we find in Anthroposophy, leads one to the riddles of life and the world. It prepares one for the experiences that are to come when one finds its way to a bridge between this world and the next. The path of the mysteries is more than the to quest to understand the depths of the human being. It is the path to the expansion of consciousness to form a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds and to be a messenger to those principles and truths. The limitations of the physical world upon which we are all a part becomes permeated by the light of direct spiritual experience. It is no longer theory or hypothesis defined by the dogma of the world's religions.
The path, if embraced with sincerity and diligence, reveals truths and facts of the spiritual worlds that once remained incomprehensible and were previously hidden. The term "astral" is a term that describes the spiritual world that each soul enters into during sleep - while alive in the physical world - and after death. Each night our consciousness shifts and we leave our physical form and participate in a new world not confined by the rules of physical existence. In these spheres, both incarnate and deceased souls interact with one another. The lower our consciousness is, or disruptive influences, the more symbolic, chaotic, and confusing our dreams become. Dreamers interact with one another, divine guides interact with us, and family members and loved ones visit with souls who still inhabit the physical world. Those who have transitions - or obtained a higher stage of initiation - are very well aware of the complexities of dealing with those who are dreaming.
However, one can lessen these lower forces and obtain a truer objective form of perception; we can engage and remember all of our experiences in their true light.
It consists of both lower and higher regions. Dr. Steiner referred to the lower Astral Plane as the "soul plane" or "soul land". This is a purgatorial sphere of spiritual activity as well as the coming, and going, between the souls of the living and the dead. The sphere beyond the lower plane was referred to as "Devachan" by Dr. Steiner; an East Indian term that correlates to the Christian perception of Heaven.
Thus, beyond the lower astral plane are higher stages of consciousness and being that can be attained and experienced. The astral plane is a plane of light. As one descends closer to the earth, twilight and darkness can be experienced as a kind of transitional space. The spiritual world is interwoven within human and animal life, yet it exists beyond the veil of outer perception for most people, who perceive the world outwardly and through intellectual thought alone, which are the necessary and primary vehicles of perception for we human beings in the physical world.
Dr. Steiner revealed that the spiritual worlds can be a confusing, and often times illusory, for someone who has no training in the colors, sounds, feelings, forms, aspects, and movements of countless spiritual beings, both incarnate and discarnate, who move about the astral plane at any given moment and interact with each other in endless ways. On the spiritual plane, what was "inner" and concealed in the physical world becomes "outer" and observable by everyone. Sometimes, he or she who has attained the ability to see into the spiritual worlds through clairvoyance perceives living aspects of themselves which appear outwardly and these images, and phantoms, can be confused with other beings moving about the spiritual planes.
On the lower astral plane, projections of the mind, and the self, exist side by side with objective spiritual beings and constructs. Thus, one can imagine how a disturbed mind, or one defined by primal aspects, can create chaos for themselves and others. For one who has been purified, and possesses a controlled mind, a greater degree of objectivity persists. Love, and its polar opposite anger and hate, are both perceived as a living force, and waves of force, that is felt. Love is warm, forgiving, liberating, welcoming, and peaceful while anger and hate are disruptive, destructive, and confusing...like a hurricane. As one might expect the latter is easier to approach, and interact with, than the former.
When viewed through the lens of Anthroposophy, the painting above portrays the two halves of the same individuality, the Ego-I and the Astral Body. While the human being is comprised of four primary sheaths, these 2 aspects separate, to some degree, from the unified whole of the human being while sleeping. These twin aspects enter the Astral world together as two halves of the same whole. The soul body processes and is influenced by the activities, thoughts, sensations, and feelings of the "I", that it has accrued during the day while awake. The "I", in turn, is influenced by the activities, messages, feelings, thoughts of the soul body as it moves about the astral plane during sleep.
On the spiritual path, it is not uncommon for the Ego-I to observe the soul body ("astral body" or "body of light"), in the first person as if it were a different person. Sometimes, if dreamer pays attention, he or she will notice that the "I" consciousness seems to drift in and out of one's body of light which can behave in mysterious ways. These twin aspects, or sheaths, are reflections of one person and belong to the same person. They are united into one physical body while we are awake.
Over time, as the consciousness of a human being matures through concentration, meditation, and transformative life experiences, the two s draw closer together. When these sheaths unite, which occurs during spiritual initiation (and after death), that person experiences astral-dream life in the first person objectively in the same way that a person does during the day in waking life; in full control and awareness of one's environment. The two other sheaths of the human being, the Etheric Body and the Physical Body, remain behind during sleep. They are influenced and transformed by the experiences of the Astral Body and the Ego-I while on the astral plane and during waking life.
As one progresses down the path of consciousness, dream experiences and memories of interactions on the astral plane are remembered with greater clarity. When one follows the path of spiritual initiation, gradual steps are taken to unify the two bodies to work effectively as one unified consciousness.
One goal, and outcome, of spiritual initiation is that the the Ego-I is effectively interwoven with the Astral-I which has been cleansed, and purified, of the imprint, wounds, and blemishes of its karma, or "Samskara", which had been balanced and matured to a place when the merging could safely take place. According to Dr. Steiner, during the process of spiritual initiation, an imprint of the Astral Body, having been purified over long periods of time, is placed upon the Etheric Body like a seal on wax. The Ego-I becomes fully self-conscious in the spiritual worlds and the Etheric body becomes capable of expanded and supersensible perception beyond the constraints, and veil, of the physical world. The initiate lives safely, and in a balanced way, between two worlds; the physical and the spiritual planes.
It is a long, long road to get to this preliminary point. It required lifetimes of sacrifice, practice, transformations, experiences, and the right moment of destiny. This spiritual tapestry, as it were, is designed by the Christ, and angelic beings, who oversee the development of each human soul from one lifetime to the next.

The spiritual path, embraced through initiation wisdom, achieved on the road of life leads one to the riddles of life and the world. It is a task to understand the depths of the human being, the true meaning of world history, the relationship of human souls to the world and the universe, and the meaning of life. The path, if embraced with sincerity and diligence, reveals truths and facts of the spiritual worlds that once remained incomprehensible that were once attributed to vague and unknowable sources. The processes of life, and the world, apply to everyone. These processes are, however, interwoven with a very personal journey.
The astral plane is a term that describes the spiritual plane that each soul enters into during sleep - while alive in the physical world - and after death. It consists of both lower and higher planes. Dr. Steiner referred to the lower Astral Plane as the "soul plane" or "soul land". The sphere beyond the lower plane was referred to as "Devachan" by Dr. Steiner; an East Indian term that correlates to the Christian perception of Heaven.
Thus, beyond the lower astral plane are higher stages of consciousness and being that can be attained and experienced. In light of Anthroposophy, the astral plane is a plane of light. As one descends closer to the earth, twilight and darkness can be experienced as a kind of transitional space. The spiritual world is interwoven within human life, yet it exists beyond the veil of outer perception for most people, who perceive the world outwardly and through intellectual thought alone, which are the primary vehicles of activity for we human beings in the physical world.
What was "inner" becomes "outer". Sometimes, he or she who has attained the ability to see into the spiritual worlds through clairvoyance perceives living aspects of themselves which appear outwardly and confuses them with other beings.
III: Pathways
“...It is often said that the first steps of Initiation are fraught with perils and grave dangers. There is a measure of truth in this. Initiation, or Yoga, is a coming-to-birth of the higher soul which lies latent in every human being. The astral body is faced with dangers analogous to those attending physical birth; there is travail before the divine soul comes forth from the desire-nature of man. The difference is that the birth of Spirit is a much longer process than that of physical birth.”
– Dr. Rudolf Steiner, An Esoteric Cosmology, Lecture VI, Yoga In East and West II, 30 May 1906, Paris https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/EsoCosmo/19060530p01.html
"…The task of the occultist, of the true Initiate, is to change the direction of his life's current. The actions of man today are impelled and determined by his feelings — that is to say, by impulses from the outer world. Actions determined by space and time have no significance.”
-Rudolf Steiner, An Esoteric Cosmology, GA 94 Lecture VI. Yoga In East and West II, 30 May 1906, Paris. This is an abridged quote. https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA094/English/SGP1978/19060530p01.html

The effort of spiritual attainment, as a conscious and deliberate study, occurs as a human being redeems their karma and transforms their “Samskara”, or imprint of unpurified habits from prior lifetimes. These imprints, or vexations, reside within the soul, or Astral Body, as dispositions, form, and habits that manifest as both the highs and the lows of our lives. They also lead to spiritual illnesses and behavior, and thought processes, that are permeated by our lower aspects; whatever those may be.
Sometimes, these vexations manifest as physical illnesses and follow form one life to the next until they are redeemed. The candidate for spiritual initiation, whether in the East or West, must transform the 7 spiritual centers of the human being as a prerequisite. There centers are 7 chakras, or wheels, that possess unique qualities and characteristics and are connected to the soul and the energy body of the human being which, in turn, directly affect the physical body. Change is a long and gradual process. -Refer to Rudolf Steiner, An Esoteric Cosmology, Lecture XIV. The Logos and Man. https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA094/English/SGP1978/19060610p01.html
Each human being, whether by deliberate effort or an organic path, purifies or degrades the 7 chakras, or 7 stages of consciousness, throughout our lives. If we can purify them, which can only be accomplished by way of genuine spiritual principles, an informed path, and spiritual compass that has a true moral foundation, we can achieve a series of inner transformations.
As Dr. Steiner observed, there are "unconscious" initiates in the world who do not possess, yet, the expansions powers of supersensible insight. others, who have reached a high degree, have acquired expanded and mature that enables them to be an active, and conscious, bridge to the spiritual worlds. This is not the same "mediumship", which is shadowy and lower form of spiritual perception that is characterized by certain danger, or various methods of hypnosis where the individual is guided into a state of unconscious perception.
The path is defined by, at a higher level, 7 larger stages, or degrees, of attainment that consist of 7 smaller aspects at each stage thus making 49 steps. There are three paths of spiritual initiation in the world today as described by Dr. Steiner; a Western path which he described as “Christian” path which is more secluded path which requires that a person, such as a monk, to retreat from the world, a “Rosicrucian” (“Rose Cross”) path which applies to people in the West who do not have the option of retreating from the world; thus, they have balanced path between living, working, and esoteric training. Lastly, Dr. Steiner described the “Yoga” path, which is an Eastern path. He stated that the Eastern path is not appropriate for those of European descent although elements of it may be incorporated into the Western path (such as breathing, yoga exercises, etc.) based on one's karma.
In the lecture series The Gospel of St. John, Dr. Steiner described the seven stages of initiation:
“I would like to describe the seven stages of initiation as they were practised in the Persian Mithras cult. It was a form of initiation that was cultivated in the whole of Asia Minor, in Greece and Rome, and even as far as the Danube basin it was practised far into the Christian era. For a long time it was possible to go through these stages even in the hidden cultic centres and temples in Egypt which were often built into the solid rock. They were only accessible to those who came to know them as morally advanced pupils and initiates after strict tests.
The first grade was the “Raven”. As a raven the neophyte carried the knowledge acquired in the outer sense world into spiritual life. The idea of the raven has lingered in myths and sagas. There are the Ravens of Wotan, the ravens of Elijah, and in the German Barbarossa saga ravens are the intermediaries between the emperor under a spell in the mountain and the outer world. In the Mithraic mysteries “Raven” signified a grade of initiation
The second grade was that of the “Occult One”. This was the name for someone who had already received some important occult secrets.
The third grade was that of the “Fighter”. These were initiates who felt their higher self to the extent that they understood sayings such as one finds in the second part of “Light on the Path” (author’s note: refer to the Meditations and Prayers page on this website; this refers to a mantra written by Mabel Collins). Only an initiate of the third grade can understand such sayings. This does not mean that the ordinary person cannot reach a certain comprehension. Everyone has a higher self, and if one is able to abnegate one's lower self and make it a servant of the higher self then one can say in a certain sense: “Though thou fightest thou art not the fighter”. But it is not until one has reached a particular stage of initiation that one really knows what this sentence signifies. What one formerly considered as higher interests become mere subsidiary interests, mere servants of the fighter.
The fourth grade was achieved when complete inner harmony and calm, equilibrium and strength are gained. This grade was called that of the “Lion”. Such an initiate had so developed the occult life in himself that he could represent the occult not only with words but with deeds.
Meanwhile the consciousness of a person who has passed through these four stages of initiation extended further and further. He identified himself with ever larger groupings of people. All these names have a hidden meaning. For instance, the expression, “The Occult One”. What is a human being as we see him in front of us? He is what is in him. As a Raven an initiate of the first grade — he tries to overcome what is only in him. Then his interests become wider. What people around him are, what they feel and what they will, becomes his own feeling and his own will. The terms were coined in times when there were still communities which were kindred enlarged families. How did one regard such a family? One said they were members of a soul-family tracing right back to a common ancestral pair — members of a hidden ego.
An initiate of the second grade, an “Occult One”, had so ennobled his ego that it became the ego of his community; he made their interests his own. The occult entity of a human community was able to live in him. When the ego of such a human community became the ego of an individual initiate then this community became his dwelling place. The “Fighter” fought for the larger community. In ancient Palestine one designated as a “Lion”, he who had raised himself up to encompass the consciousness, the ego, of a whole tribe. The “lion” of the tribe of Judah is the term applied to someone who had reached such a stage of initiation that he bore within himself the ego of the whole tribe.
The initiate of the fifth grade had so overcome his personality that he could take up the folk-soul. The folk-spirit lived in him. In Persia such an initiate was called a “Persian”. In Greece one would have called him a “Grecian”, if it had been the custom. What does this grade signify? For him everything individual has vanished and his consciousness has become one with the whole. This constitutes a higher state of consciousness.
Today it is different. Because of the splitting up of all communal groups we meet with quite different stages of initiation.” -Rudolf Steiner, The Gospel of John, GA94, Lecture 3. https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA094/English/UNK1980/19060305p01.html
No one knows for sure where the path truly begins, but in the present lifetime - as one has become aware of such things - a conscious effort always has a spiritual counterpart and changes will surely follow if the moment is right and things are moving in the right direction.
One thing is certain, as John was to discover. Behind the waking and conscious world is a deep and mysterious reservoir of soul-spiritual forces that are hidden or at best manifest as darker feelings, that make the human being what it is. Every person has this hidden reservoir, and it metes itself out gradually over time as decisions lead to outcomes and the soul expresses itself in response to conditions and events, in this or that way on the course of life. These are dispositions resulting from long-standing habits that leave their mark on the person, their relations, and the world.
These hidden folds of the human being must be brought under control. Before that can happen, however, these living forces must be identified, stimulated, exposed, and transformed...a student must objectively look at the darker aspects of his or her personality. This dark side to human nature - and we all have it - can be referred to as the Doppelganger, Shadow, or Double. On the path, if it is necessary, this shadow can be exposed through a manual process that is carefully overseen by teachers and divine guides.
IV: Soul Splintering

Poster of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", John Barrymore, Circa 1920.
- “And what's the other unavoidable experience one has by faithfully doing the exercises? It's a splitting of the personality.
A man will begin to feel as if something was accompanying him, something that thinks and hears with him and even speaks with him if he's inwardly weak. It's a second ego that emerges, a doppelganger that one has placed outside one. The more seriously someone treads the esoteric path, the more of his old man he places outside him, that is, he sheds one skin after another like a snake.
These skins become like a second body, a doppelganger who never leaves one again for the rest of one's life. In the old Egyptian mysteries someone who had placed his double outside him was called a 'kha man'. The double is chained to the kha man to constantly remind him what he was or still is. That's not always a pleasant feeling. But the awareness that he always has his double with him will remind him of his defects and that he should improve himself.
He should constantly feel this presence, otherwise things would get dangerous, and because of his many, high ideals and intentions, he would forget what his inner life and defects are. Under certain circumstances it could even endanger a high initiate's life if in spite of his high striving he would forget this double for even a moment.
He could actually lose his physical body through death, somewhat like one who's concentrating on a sublime problem, forgets to pay attention to traffic and gets run over. The more the double appears the better it is for our development, for otherwise, we would be living under great delusions about ourself. For we can't see the progress we've made; only our teacher can.”

-Rudolf Steiner. Esoteric Lessons II, GA 266, Lesson 39, Hannover, December 31, 1911" *This is an abridged quote. The parenthesis are the author's.

The offer was accepted. The moment had arrived. John was destined to pass through a membrane of inner spiritual experience and become a "kha" man. During moments when he found inner peace, and the turmoil was silent, he dreamt of the sea, the sky, and a world without egotism, pride, and vanity. He had come to deplore those aspects of life which he saw in each and every person of the world - including himself - to some degree. He dreamt of a world where brotherhood and friendships lived and endured; a place where people had risen above themselves. It was a beautiful dream. Somehow, he knew that heaven - where people live in peace, love, and true knowledge after they die - was such a place. If only he could find a path to get there...
His past, which had accumulated through is karma, had to be confronted. His was a soul journey marked by conflicts, wars, and moments in history that had long since faded. The faces of those he had been, and was destined to become, had flashed before him during dreams and waking visions.
He had never forgotten the events of the past and the love, and anger, that he felt towards those who lived and died alongside him. They resided in his soul as dispositions and biases. They lived within him as a feeling. The echoes of those forgotten fields which changed the lives of millions of people in one way or another, followed him in the depths of his soul.
They drew him back and, at times, he struggled. The memories of past lives had appeared to him sporadically throughout his life often in response to life events which appeared to have no outer significance. He was able to gather, through an inherited form of clairvoyance (or whatever term one so chooses) and dreams, where he had lived, people he had known and been separated from by fateful decisions, and battles that he had fought in.
But, always within him as the strongest currents were the heartfelt echoes of lost loves and the families of those who had been painfully left behind. The yearning and longing of loves that had long since transformed through the passage of history and rebirth, haunted him in invisible ways. He often was one of those who frequently did not return from those forgotten battles of the past. Held back only by the shadows of the past, John had no idea what resided in the depths of his Samskara, or residual karmic imprints, from the past. They consisted of both angels and demons.
These layers, which were the remnants of the sins of the past interwoven in his soul, were peeled off of him gradually through an inner process managed by spiritual guardians that were visible to him during dreams and visions. As a seeker passes through this unusual process, aided by divine guides and angelic guardians, the individual must be committed, patient, and enduring. One must keep one's feet on the ground, as it were. He or she must trust in one's spiritual guides and angelic guardians regardless of what is observed through dreams, meditations, and visions.
The most sentient part of these layers is a soul force, which, as a reflection of the human Ego or "I", accompanies the seeker throughout the rest of his or her life as one becomes increasingly aware of the processes and nuances of the spiritual-physical constitution and workings of one's own being. At moments, this part of ourselves, which resides in the soul and becomes conscious, speaks and thinks utterances as it trails the thoughts and feelings of a person - as an Ego - during our daily lives. This personal spiritual reflection, which is a creation of the individual soul, up until its point of emergence is a theory. It is also referred to in Spiritual Science, initiation wisdom, and the Mysteries as a "double" or "doppelganger".

One night, while dreaming, the strangest of experiences occurred. John found himself standing in front of his Teacher and Spiritual Guide in full consciousness in the first person. His teacher, who had promised to take John on as a student, was a genuine spiritual initiate who was carefully overseeing John. This person was now observing him on the Astral Plane. Then, a signal was given.
John sensed a powerful surge of spiritual energy rush up from underneath and within him as if it had been artificially applied. It flowed throughout his Astral Body through a spiritual vascular system. He felt this energy growing with intensity as it flowed through channels in his body that were akin to spiritual pathways; some of which had been cleared and purified. Other pathways appeared to be blocked and some of John's "spiritual arteries" could not carry the powerful current cleanly. When the flow of energy became blocked, the energy looked for another path and circulated throughout John's soul-being in a unique way.
The current caused him to vibrate. His Ego and and Astral Body, at that moment, were effectively layered within one another. All of the sudden, this electric surge became blocked around his waist area. Suddenly his soul body shuttered violently and uncontrollably and he lunged at his teacher as if another being was emerging from within himself. He was shocked at this response. The teacher blocked him from this unconscious response gently and he fluttered to the side and came to rest on the ground. At that point, John was observing his spiritual self in the third person after being split apart. There was no pain involved in physical terms. He awoke confused and fearful for what he had witnessed.
John's Ego was partially united with his Astral Body when this event occurred but the unification had been an imperfect one, thus leadership decided to test it. Had it been a smooth unification, having practiced meditation for years, in terms of consciousness, the process would have gone smoothly and John would have awoken with greatly expanded spiritual vision and continued on his path. It was clear to John from the result that the test that he had failed.
During the separation, John's Ego faded and went dark. There were now two John's; his Ego, which remained unchanged from before and continued with life as usual, and his amplified Astral-Soul Body, which had its own Ego which became incredibly sensitive to thoughts and experiences.
This was a deliberate procedure overseen by Spiritual Guides but John - or the Ego of John which was most conscious during waking life - could do nothing but watch as his Astral Body fell into a state of chaos. What followed in the coming months was an inner struggle that seemed to have no end as his Ego, which receded into the background during his dream life tried to overcome the defects of his Astral-Soul Body; disparities which appear in people as words, thoughts, and deeds that we overlook in our daily lives. Things that were otherwise insignificant became very important. The smallest of words, glances, and passing thoughts had a direct and amplified effect upon John's soul body now. He would never be the same.

“All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby Dick.
He piled upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart’s shell upon it.” -Herman Melville, Moby Dick

John quickly realized that the personification of Moby Dick lay in himself. The "Samskara", or residual karma that had yet to be purified in John's soul that lay within him, came to life outwardly as feelings, words, frustrations, confusion, and expressions that was observable while he dreamt.
A layer had been stripped away, and amplified, within John's soul by a deliberate spiritual process. This layer was attached to him and lived within him, yet was observable while he dreamed in the third person. All of the conflicts of the past, the struggles, the countless wars that he had fought in throughout the history of the world and his prior incarnations which had been revealed to him, and all of his fears, competitive drives, primal instincts, loses from the past yearning including romantic relationships and friendships with those who were vitally important to John and with whom he had been separated, and fears manifested as feelings of anger, disorientation, and sadness.
His Astral-Soul Body often ran about aimlessly on the astral plane while he dreamed; it cursed, it wept, and it expressed its lowest aspects - sometimes in an uncontrolled way - towards anyone who approached him while dreaming and his soul occupied the astral plane. John, as an Ego during the day in the physical world, was powerless to prevent these stirrings and apologized through prayer before he went to bed and after he awoke. It became a routine.
The ghosts of the past, and there were many for John whose "imprints" had followed him into his current lifetime and were buried deep within himself, revealed themselves on the path life anonymously and without anyone's direct knowledge. All of his enemies, whether real or imagined from his current life and past lives, had transformed and continued their destinies. The most subtle of impulses, which are hardly perceptible during our waking life, came to life on the Astral Plane while dreaming with astonishing vitality...sometimes with frightening intensity. Some were simple dispositions yet to be transformed; others brought forth by seemingly innocuous encounters with others during the normal course of life as if connected - and stimulated - by predestined moments written in Time.
There was a "skidding" and "amplification" effect between what John felt, thought, and did during the day, however seemingly insignificant, and the behavior of his Astral-Soul Body at night. No matter how hard he tried, John could not make a valid correlation between some of the behaviors and activities of his Astral-Soul Body that he observed in the third person every night while dreaming and his waking life during the day, which was, rather peaceful and monotonous.
While his dream-life was becoming increasingly vivid, and unusual, and the experiences that he remembered from his dreams were mysterious, there was definitely a lot of activity in the astral plane while he slept. Angelic Guides, Teachers, old friends, relatives, and strangers – who were not strangers as it turns out – approached him and shared ideas and had lengthy discussions many of which he could not remember upon waking. Handshakes occurred and old relationships were rekindled. Mysterious interactions occurred between John, and divine guides, which defy any rational explanation and yet had profound spiritual impacts on his Astral Body and his spiritual life...
A Lecture Hall in the World of the Spirit

The Astral Plane is made of light and spirit. It is not physical yet is more real than the physical world. In occult science, the term "astral plane" refers to the lowest three regions of spiritual experience that border on the physical world. Beyond that are planes of the "spirit." These are higher planes where those who have passed through higher stages of transformation can travel and exist within.
The lower astral planes can be chaotic, as the uncontrolled impulses, feelings, and primal thoughts of people are expressed outwardly and can be observed, felt, and even impressed upon other people. Each soul, however, in the world of the spirit can move about without the contraints of physical gravity based on the limitations imposed upon them by their state of being.
Gravity is a function of consciousness and the weight of one's deeds, thoughts, and feelings. There is no sense of the forward movement of time unless one maintains a conscious connection with those left behind or is connected to on the physical planes. Time slows in the physical world and consciousness contracts as one prepares for and returns for an incarnation and a unique mission.
However, in the spiritual world there is SPACE and a vibration based on the quality and moral maturity of each soul. Souls can occupy the same space at once without being aware of it. People who allow themselves to succumb to primal forces, for example, find themselves constrained or unable to move forward to their fullest potential. Throughout the spiritual worlds, which consist of lower and higher dimensions, ideas, feelings, and thoughts are communicated throughout the environment seamlessly through the "ethers" or "substance" of the planes of light. There is no need for electronics, phones, computers, or televisions although constructs appear that resemble these things by which information is shared.
Many schools, facilities, and universities exist for the instruction and healing of souls on the spiritual and physical dynamics of the human being, destiny, history, the world, and the universe. Some near-death experiencers have told of experiences with great and magnificent libraries, healing facilities, universities, and cities made of light, spirit, love, and activity. Above is an example based on the author's experience of a lecture hall where those who have transitioned to the spiritual world after death are listening to a lecture from a spiritual teacher; typically, an angel or divine guide who is trying to inform, prepare, and help others on their life journeys. I can imagine, however, that teachers of all levels engage to help others of all levels of attainment like any university.
V: The Edge of the Abyss
If the Astral or Soul Body, of which our waking consciousness as an "I" is but a reflection, cannot receive the full imprint of the higher Ego or the Ego has become corrupted and still lives within primal impulses, the Astral Body which can only truly be observed at night during dreams for the average person - is typically partially disorganized, skiddish, corrupted, and disoriented when it is guided through the initial stages of initiation; that process which was designed and is overseen by divine guides intended to expedite soul-transformation in this, and future lifetimes.
Thus, because of John's karmic history, which still contained a large echo of unredeemed karma, was amplified and brought outside of himself when John was infused with a "Pranic" charge observable only during his dream/sleep life. John's Astral-Soul Body became inflamed because John had not transformed the hidden and active parts of the soul that, when purified, can lead to a full and growing expansion of consciousness.
His best and worst qualities sprung to life with frightening intensity outside of himself during a dream during which time he observed himself transition from the view of the first to third person. It was a terrifying experience. This was a gift from the Lesser Guardian of the Threshold, his Spiritual Teachers, and his Guardian Angel. John was forced to confront the activities of his dreams in waking consciousness and and behaviors as living things; moving, alive, and filled with life.
During this process, if the Astral-Soul Body had been purified, the intervention, as it were, would have gone smoothly and the first stage of spiritual initiation, at least at the Astral level, wold have been achieved. John would have awoken with an expanded consciousnesses, to some degree, which would have unfolded gradually in the subsequent weeks, months, and years as a psychic disposition and maturing supersensible ability. This, however, did not happen.
In the coming weeks, John often observed himself during his dream in the third person instructed in spiritual classrooms consisting of teachers, peers, and regular folk alike who were trying to reach a higher stage of spiritual development. Some were deceased and moved about the astral plane in full waking consciousness having passed through the process of death and the travails of initiation after they died which includes the shedding of one's lower self and the full transformation of the soul and the "I" - which everyone does - and others were dreaming while asleep in the physical world; each of which possessed a varying degree of consciousness just as John was.
In other words, some souls - who often appeared as pure light beings and could not be readily identified without them revealing their appearance to John - acted out of their subconscious impulses outwardly and could not control thoughts, feelings, and impulses that would arise suddenly from the soul itself and float about the astral plane as living things. It can be a horrifying experience to see and feel primal impulses screaming through the spiritual ethers - or atmosphere - as strange symbols and living forces that one cannot necessarily avoid.
It could be, on the other hand, a wonderful experience to observe the love and kindness of mature souls who could send their heart forces out into others which could be felt with the heart and soul of John and others. This occurs especially with souls who share deep and close relationships from current and prior lifetimes and live within close and personal karmic families. All souls reincarnate together within shared circles repeatedly over the course of history. Other yet actually appeared to be sleeping on the astral plane as if they were sleeping in the physical world; in beds, on the ground, or even in the air - a condition that John learned was the cessation of consciousness that seemed to him, as least, as a kind of spiritual illness or condition that had to remedied. Stress, fatigue, loneliness, sickness, and trauma can also lead a soul to be sleeping in both worlds at the same time.
John was also continually instructed personally by loved ones and teachers; this occurred in thew first and third person. John observed that his Astral-Soul Body had great difficulty solving basic problems that anyone with a foundational and basic education could solve in the waking world. There was a gap in his memory and cognitive abilities at the soul level that his guides, and friends, were trying to solve but he could not make sense of it; he had only vague recollections of actual details upon waking from his dream life. While dreaming, John's Ego observed spiritual teachers instructing his Astral-Soul Body in a classroom personally on basic things such as math, symbols, memory, and basic logic. There appeared to be a "spatial" gap in the reasoning and memory of the Astral-Soul Body; something that did not manifest in the Ego during waking life and was not a serious hindrance.
It was tragic and depressing to see that no matter what approach John's peers and teachers tried while John was dreaming that he had a blockage of some kind. Was it impassable? What were the long-term ramifications of such a flaw? Nevertheless, they kept at it and refused to give up. It was to be a long journey. Only love and a commitment to a higher cause inspired those who ceaselessly tried to help him.
This was a major obstacle to further development. John witnessed a group of people testing his Astral-Soul Body, fairly and objectively, and failing tests repeatedly. His astral-soul body appeared to behave as a child at times and an adult at others. He witnessed the same phenomena in others who appeared in a classroom environment, which resembled a university but existed in the spiritual world; an institution with classrooms and conference rooms where individuals sat and listened to instruction from teachers, both living and "dead".
All of these teachers were initiates to some degree or angels, while some were companions. Some of his peers that had crossed over, as John noticed, tried to help and often overstepped their influence and failed for personal and karmic reasons. Others were partially successful having had a strong and positive influence on John from prior lifetimes. However, students of all ages were engaged in traditional learning environments where all aspects of cosmic and human existence were being discussed, taught, and considered. People were instructed on God, the energy centers of the human being, karma, the world, spiritual life, the mystery of the human being, consciousness, and the cosmos.
One particular academy was kept separate from the broader Astral Plane; students were selected for instruction based on their karmic history, disposition, the individual's state of consciousness, and choice. There were smaller classes, consisting of some 20 people, and larger classes consisting of hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of people. John learned that these classes consisted of discarnate souls - those who passed through the gate of death - and incarnate souls who were sleeping, dreaming, or meditating in the physical world having the ability to raise their individuality into the spiritual worlds in a waking manner. Some received this knowledge in full awareness, while others received impulses, ideas, and instruction without their waking awareness. John imagined these souls waking up ready for work, school, or whatever their day was ahead of them with no memory of what had occurred while they journeyed in the spiritual spheres. There is a profound mystery at work in this necessary, constructive, and enduring process.
Thus, John, like everyone, co-existed with many souls on the Astral Plane during his sleep life. During these lessons, when spoken to by Teachers, some people uttered incoherent nonsense as if they had no intellectual capability whatsoever although they appeared to be normal and functional adults. This included John's Astral Body that, at times, seemed to speak words that did not align to the Ego's thoughts, will, or ideas. Sometimes, words and thoughts appeared as mere gibberish. The closer that John's Ego became in relation to the Astral Body, in terms of consciousness after being separated through a deliberate process, the more "skiddish" the Astral-Soul Body became. Sometimes, a guide would put a spiritual restraint on the Astral-Soul Body when the Ego approached it just to be safe as it had become a unpredictable..
Clearly, there was a gap that needed to be resolved. But just why it was there, and who could solve it, was beyond John.
Some souls that were encountered on the Astral Plane at night could not communicate well demonstrating a similar spatial gap in their communicative abilities; just like John. Others whom John encountered, and brought back to waking life through memory, were fast asleep. For example, on one occasion John encountered rows of sleeping people, of all cultures, genders, ages, and races, sleeping safely on the Astral Plane; a plane of light. During that moment, John grew irritated and played marching band tunes, out of his mind, and yelled loudly as he walked through a row of sleeping people who were arranged in cots row upon row trying to wake them up; people who were asleep in the physical world and fast asleep on the Astral Plane as well; they were not consciously awake.
This was not a symbolic dream, or something connected to a movie or fictional novel; it was an objective experience on the Astral Plane. As John fled the area, chased off by a type of "Sleep" Guardian, they did not awaken despite his best efforts. John's Ego, upon waking, deduced that "Sleep" condition, where activity is hindered a the supra-conscious s level in a mental and spiritual sense, was not an uncommon problem. Or, was it a divine process and John committed an error? He did not know...
After several months of effort, Amanda - for whatever reason - was unable to make any further progress. A meeting was held. John saw himself in a foyer to a large conference room with several people and were deciding John's fate and the path forward to help John. It was not about preferences as John, and Amanda, had become attached and she was unable to get John past a certain point. His Astral-Soul Body began to have tantrums for some reason while John slept and he was forced to observe it with no understanding of why, or how, his Astral-Soul Body was so dysfunctional.
Special assistance was needed by someone who could attend to John's Soul Body, or Astral Body, and could play the role of a mother, teacher, and companion. In spiritual terms, John needed someone who was willing, and able, to spend a great deal of time with him in a way that the teachers did not have the bandwidth, ability, or time to do; they had many students under their umbrella and John needed special help.
Some months before the splitting of John's Astral Body and Ego on the Astral Plane, John had been approached, at first during his dream life and then through a clairvoyant perception, by a young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes with whom he, as he came to discover, had been connected - in a very personal way - in many, many prior lifetimes. After this woman's tragic and premature transition, she passed through the membrane of death and remembrance where her past lives were reviewed and the relationships she carried with her. Having discovered John's identity in the world, and the reality of their close karmic relationship which neither of them had not known about during life, she found a path to approach him and reconnect. Perhaps, she surely thought, she could help on the path...
Amanda returned to reconnect with John only with the help of divine guardians. John had several dreams previously where, through a clear form of memory, he observed her crossing over into the Astral Plane through a cloudy sphere of pink, grey, and white colors. She was confused, angry, and unaware of her surroundings. John stood there alone as she passed by. and said "hi" to her, but she passed by...
He awoke and said a prayer for her . Some months and years later, he observed her, in a restored spiritual form to the prime of her life, receiving a report from her Angelic Guardian that contained information on her, him, and their karmic history. She did not notice him again and he watched her walk into the horizon, in the direction of the sun after leaving an office, as it were, of her angelic guardian; a spiritual sun of white light that was just over a beautiful green hill...a place he could not go.
Several months later, she returned to John in a dream. Then, weeks later, she appeared sporadically through clairvoyance and John's dream life. He would be moving about, in a typical day, and she would flash in his mind actively as a living image - like a video phone-call - and the two began to communicate. It was not long before her love radiated outwardly as a living force of white Astral light; John's heart began to open, in spiritual terms, and the euphoric sense of being enraptured in a love "force" from someone else was overwhelming. It was an experience that can only be experienced in spiritual terms.
People, while we are alive, are shielded from the true feelings of others - be it negative or positive - through a physical sheath and a barrier that cannot receive the innermost thoughts, feelings, and ideas of others. we are compelled to interpret, and perceive, the actions of others through gestures, the tones of one's voice, movements, etc. What Amanda brought was an objective experience from without, that pierced John within. John had experienced love from others, so it was not the first time. But, it was the first time that John felt, in a true sense, genuine and overpowering love from a woman that radiated out of another person; not from himself where a feeling of love radiates only from within. This living force was a genuine "substance" of the heart; a spiritual force that originated from, and was absorbed within, the heart chakra.
It was not a personal egoistical experience in the first person as a person lives through it, which often produces illusions, during waking life. No, her love "forces" surrounded John like a soft cloud coming to him from the outside of his being. His heart began to glow on its own and he felt warmth and the euphoric sense of love enveloping him, in a spiritual sense, every day and night for weeks. Her love was boundless...
John quickly realized that her love for him was absolute as his was for her; it lit a glowing fire in his heart and he remembered their deep personal connection from the past which had been resurrected. They trusted each other implicitly and loved each other without conditions. She shared details about their former incarnations together - more frequently as lovers and companions - who dedicated themselves to each other heart and soul. She also shared the fact that that he, and she, had fought and died for one another on several occasions under tragic circumstances...
This beautiful young woman had been fully restored to her prime after death, as all people are. She was radiant and healthy. She was given an assignment; the opportunity to help John personally an attempt to mature his spatial and reasoning capabilities during his dream life. She carried out this task with the help of deceased relatives and the advice of guides hoping that her profound personal relationship with John, which had been cultivated since the beginning of human evolution, would help him.
The Ego, as it turns out, had grown far ahead of the Astral body in intellectual terms. The two were different, and yet identical, aspects of the same individual. They were reflections of each other. However, the Ego did not possess the same attributes of the Astral Body which carried the Samskara, and imprint, of former lifetimes which were also imbued in the Etheric, or Energy, Body which remains behind during sleep with the Physical Body.
The astral, or soul, body of light of John appeared to have its own Ego which manifested lower and higher aspects. Thus, John felt like he was observing a "second self", or double, while dreaming. John was told by a companion that one was the same as the other during clear dreams. There was no difference although there was a marked difference when John was observing his dream life.
The Astral Body and the Ego reflected upon each other in a dualistic way. It was a two way street. What the Ego did, thought, and felt, down to minute details including meaningless glances and behavior became the stuff of an intensive study. Over the coming months, frustrating teaching sessions occurred and Amanda was was compelled to manifest extreme patience when dealing with an Astral-Soul Body that was passing through an expedited and transformative process.
In reality, the Ego, or "I", continually imprints itself onto the Soul Body, or Astral Body, during one's lifetime. How mature the Astral Body is, or purified, determines how much of the Ego is retained. It contains all of the "Samskara" of prior lifetimes as where the Ego-I is an expression of the Astral Body from birth based on the environment in which it was raised; this was determined by one's karma before being born. After death, the Ego is imprinted on to the Astral Body, and the Astral Body is purified of its lower elements, and the two forms are merged.
What follows from that point is the shedding and "giving back" of one's lower aspects accumulated during life to the universe. Unredeemed karma is imprinted upon the Astral-Soul Body (and Etheric or Formative Body) for the next lifetime; whenever that will be. According to Dr. Steiner, each soul who passes through the gate of death passes through a purification period, or "purgatory", lasts approximately 1/3 of the number of years that the individual lived during life. Dr.Steiner referred to this period as "Kamaloca".
During one's life, if the Astral Body cannot receive the full imprint of the Ego, or the Ego has become corrupted and lives with primal impulses, the Astral Body, which carried some measure of the Ego-I as a reflection, can become skittish, corrupted, and disoriented. This was amplified when John's was given a "Pranic" charge during his sleep life and the Soul Body became inflamed and amplified. If the Soul Body had been purified, the process would have gone smoothly and the first stage of spiritual initiation, at least at the Astral level, wold have been achieved. John would have awoken with an expanded consciousnesses, to some degree, which would have unfolded gradually in the subsequent weeks, months, and years.
Like so many others in the world, John's Astral Body had spiraled into confusion; at least temporarily. It had to be educated like a rebellious child, step by step, gradually and patiently. There are schools, and programs, for this education, however, peers and loved ones from one's karmic soul family are often asked, if they agree, and employed for this purpose. It is a loving task that requires training, tremendous patience, and commitment.
They await for the candidate, or "probate", of initiation to go sleep and plan activities every night that guide the trainee, as it were, further down the path. Some nights, while dreaming, there appeared to be setbacks while others were encouraging and successful. Amanda and John's relative, who were leading the charge as a project team now, worked tirelessly to help John every night; They communicated through symbols, images, and if possible, words to give him direction on what to do, or change, during his waking life.
It is a task of love and light...a task suitable only for Light Workers and Torch Bearers; souls who are dedicated to a higher task and mission for the world of which each individual is a part. Many who cross over want to help those whom they have left behind.
John had a path to something larger than himself; a unique path that would, hopefully, lead to his spiritual initiation in the distant future. It may be 10,000 away...who knows...but the path would be there. Amanda , bound to John by karma, reinvested herself to help and be a part of a mutual plan of collaboration and fellowship.
Amanda, with whom he had become reacquainted, was destined to play a vital role in his spiritual life and future lifetimes. She went so far as to seek out and reunite John with deceased pets while dreaming on the Astral Plane; pets that had died during his youth reappeared and the two took long walks together. She was able to read John's thoughts and feelings and respond quickly and in accordance with her path and plan.
Amanda renewed their long, lost friendship, as it had been in past lifetimes, transformed by the passage of time...and yet it was so much the same. She became John's best friend, advisor, helper, and companion for the duration of his life as he would come to fight countless personal battles, manifestations of his "shadow," and the tests that would come to him as a right of passage. They would lead to many failures and victories, but her presence was always there...
There was a bigger mission at work for John, even though he was unaware of it. John would come to behold Amanda not as a memory, but as a living presence in his prayers, thoughts, and feelings. He came to learn that she was sent to him by divine guides as the two had helped one another through very difficult lifetimes in the past.
He regarded her as "...she whom I have loved, love, and shall love eternally..."
VI: Pattern Recognition
"Such is the way of the world...
Just where to put all your faith
And how will it grow.
Such is the passage of time
Too fast to fold
Suddenly swallowed by signs
Low and behold
Gonna rise up
Find my direction magnetically..."
- Abridged Lyrics from "Rise" by Eddie Vedder

Amanda returns. After a close personal companion that John was karmically connected to had died, John maintained an active connection. Amanda suddenly appeared repeatedly to John on the Astral Plane while he dreamed. She was observable directly through a form of picture-based clairvoyance while John was awake.
Although she died before her time, she appeared as she was during the apex of her life when she was young, healthy, radiant, and beautiful. She radiated with love and light having been restored after death by the miracle of the redemption of the Christ and the restorative forces of the universe that emanate eternally from God. Thus, when she appeared she covered in light and walked among a plane of light with John every night while he dreamt for many years.
All that we have ever truly loved, and bonded with at the soul level, is a part of us forever. All relationships have lower and higher aspects - subject to the double's destructive influences - as all human beings are inevitably imperfect. Regardless, as we struggle with the journey of the human soul over many lifetimes, our relationships appear again and again transformed by the passage of time, experience, and decisions.
The mystery of love, which expresses itself in having profoundly loved someone out of the deepest fibers of the human heart, forever remains within us. It never dies. It inevitably finds unique expressions over time, based on the goals, aspirations, and decisions of each soul. The impulse of true love with our closest spiritual companions, is frequently concealed by the veil of amnesia as one passes through the byways of physical life. It is always carried within us out of the soul and transmitted through the forces of the spirit. It will rise again as destiny fulfills itself as planned and overseen by our guardian angels and divine guides.

When a soul crosses the boundary of physical death, all of its experiences of his or her life are visually experienced in every nuance and detail over the course of several days. This includes how one impacted the lives of others. One is forced to look at the outcome of every word, thought, glance, feeling, and outcome from the other person's perspective. Alongside this difficult experience, however, is the universal love the Christ and divine guides - our universal family - which permeates the entire cosmos.

In addition to this, however, is many subsequent experiences. This individual love is a living force that can be sent to other beings outwardly. It can manifest itself like a fiery phoenix. It shines brighter than ever before. It is revived after one recovers living and active memories of one's prior lifetimes through the eternal record of all universal activity; the "Akashic Records." There, and if one is granted permission to do so, the record of one's experiences can be reviewed in every detail as a picture-based, feeling-based immersive review.
One may find, for example, that one has been intimately close to someone they never knew in their most recent incarnation or lifetime. One may find that an unrecovered or lost love - or family member - was never with them in their most recent lifetime. Naturally, these revelations are accompanied by profound desire and wish to be reunited. This may occur in preparation for a future lifetime that is being planned.
This was the case with John and Amanda. They had lived many lifetimes together as romantic partners, relatives, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, etc. John was not aware of these facts until he passed through the first stages of own memory recovery through the preliminary stages of his own spiritual initiation. Love is a living force that radiates from the heart and the soul and can build a bridge between the darkness and the light. It can traverse any void. There is no desert, mountain, void, or boundary that it cannot cross. Through that eternal light, and the powerful and enduring love between two people who had genuinely loved one another and helped each other many lifetimes in the past, Amanda suddenly appeared...
The name "Amanda" is Latin feminine meaning “she who is fit to be loved”, "deserving to be loved," "worthy of love," and "loved very much by everyone." I would also add to this list "she who radiates love." In the coming months, Amanda - in spiritual terms as she had passed through the gate of death a few years before - brought endless waves of love, joy, friendship, smiles, and information to John. These living forces far more real than any emotion he had experienced during his life which was solitary and isolated in nature. In other words, John had never felt the real force of "love" from another human being because of the boundaries of the physical self. One can only demonstrate love through deeds, ideas, and feelings. These living "waves" of heart and soul-based affection are never "felt" as a living, radiating, active force emanating from another person that actually moves and is experienced through the soul while one is alive in the physical world.
He was aware of her presence at all times - both during his waking and dream life - and she was tuned into his every thought and feeling, as he was to hers. He tested her on several occasions to validate things as she brought messages to him during his waking life. He asked her to validate things while he dreamed, to which she consistently and readily responded. She validated each request patiently realizing how important that it was.
It became painfully obvious - even rhetorical - that she was truly a part of his soul-life and not a part of some fantasy or delusion. John had developed a genuine psychic ability over the course of many years and now it was clear. He accepted her with open arms, and an open heart, and began a loving spiritual friendship. John had heard of soul mates, but did not believe in the concept necessarily in the way other people do in childish and romantic terms, yet he allowed himself to conceive of the notion that Amanda may be his soulmate and was someone with whom he had a very personal, and special, connection.
Visions and revelations of past lives they lived together frequently appeared in the landscape of John's consciousness while he dreamed and during the day through spontaneous clairvoyant visions. These experiences were supplemented by John's spiritual teachers and his deceased father who had died years before and was heavily involved as an advocate, teacher, and guide. Thu, Amanda and his father frequently appeared together during John's dream life and communicated with each other and John. HE learned that his father also had a deeper karmic connection with Amanda from prior lifetimes but had never met her, or known about her, during his life before he died. John found this astonishing and wonderful.
Through the vision cultivated by the opening of the third eye, Amanda brought mysterious visions of the past and prior lifetimes that the two had passed through. The two had made countless lovers pacts, been married, relatives , and fellow travelers since time began. She began helping him in his karmic research, meditations, and personal interests. He returned the favor by prayer, meditations, and projecting a love impulse into the spiritual world. There was never, it should be noted, an order to "do this or that" by either party.
These communications were visions and impulses that arose within him as feelings, words, thoughts, and facts regarding past-lives and the nature of their close - perhaps at times too close - karmic relationship. The central theme being that..."this is WHO I am, this is what we once WERE, this is how I FEEL, this is where you NEED to go...and this is HOW and WHERE we are going to be together in the future lifetimes."
They had been seeking one another in life, albeit in a subconscious way, but never found one another having been separated by karma. John came to learn that a kind of codependency exited between them having been forged by the trials and journeys of prior lifetimes - that led to kind to kind of inner loneliness and yearning that sprung to life only in full awareness in the spiritual worlds and the depths of the heart. For this reason, they had been temporarily separated so that they could develop their freedom and self-reliance to a higher degree. Nonetheless, it had been a painful separation that now appeared as a living memory transformed by the passage of rebirth - characterized by a form of spiritual amnesia - and the restoration of John's spiritual memory.
Amanda was filled with a seemingly boundless energy of love for John; it contained neither judgement nor egotism. She simply radiated love and light and wanted to be with him and he with her. She often appeared to John during his dreams radiating white light from her spirit that sent warm waves of love into him; things he carried with him when we awoke and would come to sustain him dark days to come.
John's heart chakra was soon opened in ways that he did not know were possible. He went so far as to contemplate if something was wrong and prayed on the matter for guidance to ensure that he had not been misled somehow by a mischievous personality. In light of Anthroposophy, there are many souls and beings moving about the astral plane. When one develops genuine clairvoyance, one must be sure to investigate these things carefully. There are divine, pure, mature, genuine, loving souls and then there are immature, malicious, and promiscuous beings of various degrees of attainment who are up to no good, as it were. Thus, one should be careful and take the time to validate experiences and perceptions and not simply accept them without reflection.
Sometimes, these malicious entities, or beings, pretend to be something other than what they truly are and wear "masks". Sometimes, altruistic spiritual companions may also appear in a kind of "costume" if they were afraid, or unable, to pierce the interference that separates the living from the "dead". Those who have passed through the gate of death are highly active and live in a multi-dimensional environment that is not confined by the same rules and limitations of the physical world. What was "inner" becomes "outer". Thoughts, ideas, and feelings are visible outwardly in the spiritual world.
Some souls who have passed over are compelled to engage anonymously and people often awake from dreams having no consciousness knowledge that a dearest loved one, or companion, came to them and was trying to advise or help them. As John learned, sometimes antagonists that John had known during his life, and who had died, appeared playing pranks and causing problems. These disruptive and mischievous behaviors, however did not last long as divine guides intervened.
During our time in the spiritual world, we live in the experiences and feelings of other people as if they were our own. Amanda and John lived within each other's experiences and coalesced in love and powerful feelings of companionship. These were profound experiences. Their reunion was a bit unusual, in karmic terms, because the two were connected only through past lives; not the most current incarnation. They had never met each other during John's lifetime.
In light of Anthroposophy and the stages of inner transformation described by Dr. Rudolf Steiner that a soul passes through after death, Amanda was passing through the initial stages of "Kamaloca." Christians refer to this stage as "Purgatory" which, according to Dr. Rudolf Steiner, lasts roughly 1/3 of the number of years that a person lived during their life. It is a time of purging, past-life reviews, transformation, and education as a soul prepares to re-enter the cosmos and prepare for a new birth. Souls, especially those that died traumatically or prematurely, during this phase often times look to reconnect with loved ones they left. Many human beings, due to a kind of neural-subconscious interference, adequate training, or karma (or all three), cannot perceives these interactions.
During these intervening years, when the soul drops its heaviness and the dregs of its prior lifetime, which are literally given back to the universe as a kind of substance, a soul can approach people who are still alive on the physical plane that it has been closest to in prior lifetimes through karma...if it is permitted by angelic guardians. People on the physical plane can be perceived by the "living" if those who remained behind have developed a sufficient degree of clairvoyance and "living" thoughts and feelings of love and support which can be reinforced through mantras and meditations that contain genuine spiritual forces. Notions that souls cannot approach their loved ones during this phase and that they must "left alone" are incorrect. All souls, including loved ones and enemies, need our prayers, love, and thoughts.

The decision to pursue the true spiritual path is an ennobled one; one that carries within it many sacrifices, commitments...and dangers. But no one, regardless of how educated they are, can anticipate what lay ahead once the ask is made and accepted by Divine Guides who agree to take a candidate into formal training for spiritual initiation; a path that leads them through the depths of the mystery of the human soul, the heart, the past, the present, the future, the world, and the cosmos.
Dr. Rudolf Steiner provided a detailed and informed path of study, meditations, and constructive habit forming routines that can guide an aspirant or "probate", as it were, through to the initial stages of initiation. However, no one understands the process, even though they may be well-studied on the subject, until they walk the path and live it. Life is the same way. Knowing one's karma is one thing and is known by souls prior to being born; walking the path must also also be done. We come to know our karma in detail and then must live through the outcomes, for better or worse, after rebirth both in the spiritual and physical worlds.

Promises are made, oaths are taken, and kept, and a long journey begins. Through spiritual initiation, and the promise to pursue it, an enhancement is put in place to an existing karmic pattern in the destiny of the seeker. A person's karmic family appears, with whom they are perhaps most closely connected especially if they are deceased and are in a position to come to the person's aide. Teachers, by way of the the spiritual worlds, engage the soul and oversee it actively during this process which unfolds gradually by degrees over the course of repeated lifetimes. This process is not the same as holistic development; preparation is involved as someone moves down the path in an expedited way. Missions are given and, if accomplished, a souls continues to work its way up the ladder of growth as it redeems its karma.

The first step on this path is a test that permeates the soul with a highly charged spiritual impulse that is "injected" directly into the soul body of the human being while on the astral plane; either while dreaming or during an expanded state of consciousness achieved during meditation. During this process, the lower elements of the human being are stimulated and amplified. A strengths and weaknesses analysis is conducted by divine guides. The seeker's "double" becomes visible and is stripped off of the candidate manually. It becomes observable, as an exact double, through clairvoyance and conscious dreaming.
It is an intimate experience and one often feels as though everything - each thought, feeling, and deed - is examined under a microscope to study character flaws which, if not remedied, could "butterfly" (refer to the "Butterfly Effect Theory"which deals with the sensitivity of effects and downstream implications) into future lifetimes with dreadful consequences. This becomes a very personal affair if one is connected to other people in the spiritual worlds who are planning for future lifetimes that are interwoven with the candidate. Those who have shared karma have a considerable interest in purging these lower aspects.
If the initial procedure of stripping off the double went well, a higher stage is reached as the soul is sufficiently mature having purged its lower elements from prior lifetimes. If it does not go well, the lower elements can become highly charged and lead to a war within one's self between the "double" and the seeker. It appears during one's dream life as though one is at war with one's self. It can experience moments of peace but also total confusion. In the ancient world, during the 3 1/2 day spiritual initiation "temple sleep" period, the soul not sufficiently prepared for this process could die.

"The premature appearance of the astral world and the sudden apparition of the Double or Guardian of the Threshold may lead a man who is not fully prepared or who has not taken all the precautions necessary for the disciple, to madness and insanity." -Rudolf Steiner, An Esoteric Cosmology, GA 94, Lecture VIII. The Christian Mystery https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA094/English/SGP1978/19060601p01.html

Thus some, who could not handle the confusing Astral experiences that haunted them during their waking life upon their return to their physical body - in the ancient mysteries - sometimes descended into madness or committed suicide.
This was is what happened, at least in part, to Caligula in Ancient Rome and Cambyses who went through the Egyptian Mystery Temples prematurely. Apparitions and phantoms appeared before the individual connected with one's Samskara and sins through the "double" - in an astral state of clairvoyance for which the candidate for initiation was not prepared - which was brought to conscious awareness of the seeker before its time. The sins, and lower elements, reappeared out of the mists of the Astral plane, amplified and animated, and tortured the candidate; sometimes as ghastly phantoms of the lower self that were often mistaken for opposing demons.
These living nightmares sometimes returned to a candidate for initiation each night during their dreams, and there was no escape. If they achieved an expanded state of consciousness prematurely, they often felt as if they were constantly being watched and became increasingly paranoid. They became riddled with anxiety and neuroses, which was exacerbated by sleep deprivation. Sometimes, souls in the ancient world passing prematurely - or sometimes due to extenuating circumstances based on need - through the stages of initiation were overcome by feelings of horror, regret, fear, the shame of unredeemed sins, helplessness, uncertainty, and rage.
In modern times, during this process, and strangely enough, the candidate during the day may not feel the effect of the frustrations of the Astral Body in a conventional way although the individual's emotional life incurs a serious wound as the Ego, which lays helplessly many times in the background during dreams while the Astral Body behaves in mysterious and confusing ways - sometimes very badly - while engaging with friends, loved ones, and others. These interactions are only present during the dream life which is perceived by the Ego and during expanded states of consciousness. Guardian angels are no doubt responsible for helping in this unenviable task.
Thus John was taken through the process which was observable during his dreams. The splitting of the self, as it were, that revealed John's "Doppelgänger ", or "Double", was a disheartening experience. The result was a necessary setback; a quandary he had to bear. And, here he thought he was an amiable-enough fellow!
Dr. Steiner referred to this moment when the seeker - every seeker - who passes and emerges through this process becomes a "Kha man"; a term used in the ancient Egyptian Mysteries.

"And what's the other unavoidable experience one has by faithfully doing the exercises (correct spiritual exercises and meditations)? It's a splitting of the personality.
A man will begin to feel as if something was accompanying him, something that thinks and hears with him and even speaks with him if he's inwardly weak. It's a second ego that emerges, a doppelganger that one has placed outside one. The more seriously someone treads the esoteric path, the more of his old man he places outside him, that is, he sheds one skin after another like a snake. These skins become like a second body, a doppelganger (author's note: "shadow" or "double" in Anthroposophical vernacular) who never leaves one again for the rest of one's life.
In the old Egyptian mysteries someone who had placed his double outside him was called a kha man. The double is chained to the kha man ito constantly remind him what he was or still is through his own thoughts. . That's not always a pleasant feeling. But the awareness that he always has his double with him will remind him of his defects and that he should improve himself." -Rudolf Steiner, Esoteric Lessons II, GA 266, Lesson 39, Hannover, 12-31-'11, https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA266/English/UNK1999/19111231e01.html *The parenthesis are the author's.
The Doppelganger was now present in John's thoughts and it would say the most awful things about other people, situations, and ideas that flowed through John's thoughts randomly. This occurred frequently when John was approached by others in clairvoyant terms from the spiritual worlds but also in his dreams. It was a cross that he had to bear based on his own sins from past and current lifetimes, and he had no choice but to accept it and make changes within himself as time went on. When the Doppelganger interfered, he would simply say "no" within his own thoughts or "be still."

Several months of peculiar dreams followed. After this experience, John had an even stranger experience. He encountered an exact double of himself during a dream. Upon going to sleep one night, John awoke inside the dream and saw his double sitting on a bed beside him (in his dream glaring back at him). The air was tense and fear immediately grabbed hold of John's astral form.
His ego lay helplessly in the background as an altercation ensued between the Lesser Guardian of the Threshold (John's higher self) and John's soul body (or astral body). John was horrified to hear a thousand voices of rage, anger, fear, and emotion echo within the landscape of a room in the spiritual worlds; a short expanse of space between his higher and lower selves. It reminded him of a bad horror movie; an experience that resonate within him for years to come.
This "double" or "Doppelganger" plays a vital role in the evolution of the human being and every person has one. It lay within the subconscious of a person until it is placed, through a spiritual process, outside of the seeker in spiritual terms. It plays the role of a kind of guide, in a way, that illuminates what still lay unpurified in the heart and soul of a seeker and must be confronted in a conscious way. It enables the seeker to avoid continuing bad habits, thought processes, and feelings that inhibit one from gaining a mature entry into the spiritual world on the path of spiritual initiation.

"We can however see from this how necessary it is that man should not demand entry into the spiritual world until he has learned and understood certain essential truths of that world by the simple exercise of his everyday intelligence, developed in the physical world. If spiritual development follows the right and normal path, then before he aspires to enter the supersensible world the pupil will already have mastered with his ordinary intelligence the whole of the earlier contents of this book.
In a training where care is not taken to develop in the pupil certainty and stability in his powers of judgment and discrimination as well as in his emotions and his moral character, it may happen that the higher world presents itself to him before he has the inner faculties with which to fact it. The encounter with his Double, will in that event cause him great distress and lead him astray. If on the other hand — as would also be possible — he were completely to elude the meeting with the Double, he would still be just as incapable of coming to any true knowledge of the higher world. For he would then be unable to distinguish between what the things around him really are and what he himself is seeing into them. To be able to do this, he must first have seen the distinct picture of his own being; then he can separate and distinguish from his environment whatever has flowed over into it from his own inner life.
As far as his life in the physical world is concerned, the moment man begins to draw near to the world of soul and spirit, the Double immediately makes himself invisible and therewith also conceals from him the whole soul-and-spirit world. The Double stands in front of it like a Guardian, forbidding entrance to those who are not yet competent to enter. He may therefore rightly be called “The Guardian of the Threshold of the World of Soul and Spirit.” -Rudolf Steiner, GA 13. Occult Science - An Outline — Chapter V: Knowledge of the Higher Worlds - Concerning Initiation (Part 8), https://rsarchive.org/Books/GA013/English/RSP1969/GA013_c05-08.html

The soul consists of an array of virtues and sinful traits. Each soul is utterly unique; yet, we are all consists of the same essential "stuff". After this spiritual charge was introduced into John's Astral Body during his dream life, all of the rage, anger, Samskara, and negative aspects of his prior lifetimes, which resided in his Soul Body, manifested within Astral Self. Through a spiritual process that each soul must pass through the Ego becomes aware of the lowest elements of his being, he or she - during sleep in the astral world while dreaming - will be forced to observe one's soul body behaving as ridiculous, angry, confused, sad, and argumentative. Sometimes, during dreams, the soul body speaks in gibberish. Sometimes, it cannot speak at all.
The soul, when "split", seems to be a reflection of two aspects; higher and lower influences. It is gradually brought under control by the efforts of productive meditations, self-purification, prayer, thought control, feeling control, and will control; a task that requires discipline and endurance. On the Astral Plane, changes are introduced by those souls who have passed through the gate of death - and guardian angels including the Christ - helping through mysterious interactions that introduce light, love, forces, and streams of energy into the Astral Body trying to facilitate a change.
In this case, John's soul team, and spiritual karmic family, reunited to help him on this task and bring his Astral Body back into control and reach the next stage; whatever that was to be. The majority of these interactions occurred during his sleep life when John's Astral Body and Ego-I moved throughout the Astral Plane while dreaming.
Due to the amplification, or Pranic charge, that was applied to John's Astral Body, it became incredibly sensitive. The slightest misthought, or slip of the tongue or mind during his waking life that worked against genuine spiritual ideals and morals, would come to life outwardly in his Astral Body while he dreamed. Others standing with him during his dream life, who were trying to help and influence him for the better, had to endure the erratic behavior of his Astral Body and press harder and harder; they demonstrated extreme patience, courage, love, and resilience.
Having given up the destructive habits that fed the Astral Body through ideas, feelings, diet, behaviors, and impulses that were once a part of his lower construct, manifesting as Samskara in his being, John was now effectively starving the Astral Body which was forced, by necessity, to accept a new way of life. While dreaming, John's "Ego-I" was forced to observe his Astral Body fly into fits of rage and anger making demands on others, speaking out of turn, and demonstrating lowly behaviors befitting an angry and spoiled child.
During his dreams, John's astral body, or soul, frequently made disruptive comments when it did not get its way. Thus, John often awoke mystified that he had it within himself, somewhere, to behave in such a childish manner. He often reflected back upon his dreams ashamed and filled with regret. At other times, his Astral Body appeared to be mature, considerate, and controlled; they way he behaved during his normal waking life.
Every glance, look, feeling, and idea came to life during his sleep life and was carefully scrutinized by Divine Guides. They often confronted John with it during the night while sleeping and he was forced to change, and alter, a habit that was destructive or taking seed...however small it may have seemed to John at the time.
The Astral Body in an untransformed state is a child. It cannot exist on its own in the physical world. In turn, the Ego-I cannot exist on its own in the Astral, or spiritual, world. The two are sheaths of an integrated whole that reflect one another in mysterious ways. The Astral Body works through the "subconscious" through feelings, impulses, and ideas. The Ego-I sifts through these ideas and impulses as they surge through the soul while awake in an increasingly conscious manner as meditating exercises are practiced.
The Ego-I then decides how to act upon, and manage, these impulses which compel he or she to behave in a certain way; either good or bad. Thus, we are influenced by our Samskara, and how we apply our will, as well as Divine and Opposing Powers who operate within fields, or areas, of human activity. Obviously, these are invisible to the naked eye during waking life to all but the most developed human beings who have achieved a higher state of consciousness.

Thus, what emerged over the course of several months, and years, was a team effort that required incredible patience, Divine guidance, an informed path, and practice. Eventually, a vital change had to be introduced, and take root, that could stabilize John's Astral Body which increasingly took on the attributes of his Ego-I. In time, each seeker must have complete mastery over his or her Astral Body having purified it of its lower impulses. Many exercises, scenarios, and mysterious interactions between John's Astral Body, his teachers, and his spiritual family (consisting of several individuals) occurred which cannot be explained or discerned in the physical world.
These are purely spiritual experiences that occur in a non-linear and multi-dimensional way which consist of color, forces, feelings, thoughts, echoes, "resonances", and willing on the spiritual plane where the inner aspects of the human being come to life. Deeds, thinking, feeling, and willing govern our lives while awake but all aspects of these core elements of the human being come to life outwardly in the spiritual world. They are perceptible as living images, colors, feelings, and even smells.

Amanda worked with John for months exercising extreme patience and effort to help him. John's spatial block, and erratic behavior, refused to change. John often observed his Astral Body while dreaming in terror. At other times, John's Ego observed an Astral Body that appeared to be a rest and peace. Some nights were a disaster while others were encouraging. A step forward appeared to be occurring followed by two steps backward. There was continued "pressure" testing of John to see where things broke. When they did, a corrective action was quickly put in place to test and bring to the conscious mind those errors of thinking, feeling, and willing that needed to be addressed and changed.
Thus, John would awaken with what he needed to correct through active participation in a ongoing process. Proper meditation, prayer, and control of diet, thinking, willing, and feeling were vital. All junk foods and harmful substances were given up years before. John had long since given up meat, tobacco, alcohol, and harmful foods such as heavy carbohydrates, fried foods, mushrooms, and lentils. These foods disturb the Etheric and Astral body and create vexations and false images on the Astral Plane that skew, and corrupt, the objective perception of a person. For example, eating lobster might clothe a colleague who approached him on the Astral Plane in a Lobster shell; meat products can amplify lower and primal influences. Lower foods, habits, feelings, and ideas attracted the opposing powers who work within the human being in mysterious and hidden ways...

Friends, teachers, and relatives tried time and time again to help, making gradual progress. Amanda continued to bring love and friendship to John, and try to instruct him, but a change was soon implemented by spiritual leaders. This path wasn't working for a variety of reasons and time was running out. Amanda had other tasks to perform, which are described by Dr. Steiner about a soul's journey from death to rebirth, and another soul was brought in to help. Throughout this process, a good friend and relative had acted as the "Team Leader", as it were, who was connected to John throughout many prior lifetimes. The two worked together ceaselessly to help John.
This call was answered by another soul who emerged to help and bring John back into balance at the Astral level. it appears that very few, if any, souls except for Amanda, and his close friend "Max", who had long been helping John since he died years before, had a closer karmic history than this woman did. She appeared suddenly and a change was introduced. "Max" was now working with two people who, in addition to loving John immensely, were long-connected to him through prior lifetimes.
This woman was with John when human souls first entered the physical plane eons ago. She was his feminine reflection with whom he had been separated by the paths of karmic necessity which were destined to dovetail together again over the course of repeated lifetimes. They had known each other during some of the most difficult moments in human history. They had been separated, reunited and separated again; sometimes overlapping in such a way that they lost contact with one another for perhaps 1, 2 or 3 lifetimes.
This woman was John's soulmate who had transitioned to the spiritual world several decades before...
Vesica Piscis: The Sacred Symbol of Soulmates

VII: John's Soulmate & Her Calling

"I have been waiting for a lifetime
to tell you that I love you.
I have loved you for all TIME,
and still love you,
and shall love you always."
-G., John's Soulmate.
On the path of his unique transformation, or initiation, John came to learn that he was intimately connected to certain persons with whom he had NO conscious knowledge of his connection to in his current lifetime. He knew that all souls are connected in the universe as a vast cosmic family. At this time, another soul appeared who responded to John's crisis. He would come to discover that he had known this woman very, very well in the past, but had long forgotten about, having passed through membrane of amnesia upon being reborn in his current lifetime.
John accepted the fact that a certain number of the souls with whom he has been closely connected through his karma were incarnated in the physical world pursuing their karma and life missions, and who were most likely suffering from the same past-life amnesia as John once was. There were others, however, that he was connected to who had passed through the gate of death and were aware of John's activities, and could observe him, from the spiritual worlds. Grace, observing John's journey, decided to intervene at this moment of destiny with the support of Angelic Guides to assist her, and him, in the years to come.
After souls pass through the gate of death, they are instructed and guided by higher beings who govern the destiny of individuals, nations, the world, and the cosmos - including the Christ, our Angelic Guardians, and an array of beings who do no incarnate in the physical world. They are careful not to infringe upon the free will of the individual, but there are moments when an assertive intervention is necessary. This was one such moment.
Sometimes, if the conditions are right, deceased loved ones can be reunited with loved ones who are still alive on the physical plane. Typically those individuals in the physical world have developed a clairvoyant ability and are sufficiently sensitive or "elastic" enough to perceive and communicate with the "dead." Other paths may reveal themselves to a person, such as near-death experiences, dream messages, or past-life hypnotic regression, to lead a person to a path for resolution. These occurrences are more common than people like to admit today. Many fear persecution or judgment from others. It is a real risk as many people today are afraid to approach real matters of the spirit.
After being separated for two lifetimes, or about 150 years, due to karmic necessity John's Soulmate returned to him. John would come to learn from his soulmate, named "Grace," that each soul in the world has only one soulmate with whom each individual is eternally connected. The origin of this connection has its source at the beginnings of human existence; the principle was a divine thought in the mind of GOD as a gift to humanity. Each soul has a companion who will help them along. John learned that souls may never meet their soulmate during their current lifetime and that oftentimes separations occur that lead to future fulfillments. This was one such case.
Due to the crisis that was observed during John's "Kha-Man" emergence, Grace answered the call to help John during this crisis having prepared herself during the period between her death and rebirth. She had died some 40 years before this moment. John's encounters with Grace occurred through lucid dreams, clairvoyance, and an evolving form of clairvoyance.
The joy on her face, at being reunited with John, was obvious as Grace came to him every night in dreams. John was mystified by that as he viewed himself as an underachiever compared to her. As it turns out, Grace had become a kind of spiritual healer and physician during her life in the spiritual worlds. How could this woman, who was a famous celebrity during her lifetime that ended prematurely, be John's soulmate? John was not famous, nor was he ever going to be. John was, in his mind, a nobody who had worked hard, and had obvious flaws, but had not achieved anything noteworthy in his life compared to Grace. Was this a trap? Was John suffering from a delusion or illusion? Time and time again Grace, and guides, refortified the fact that her appearance was no illusion.
John did not really believe in soulmates, although he was open to it, and he found that not only did he have one but that she had sworn an oath to help John at all costs during this process knowing that the two of them were destined to find each other again. John discovered that each person in the world has a soulmate assigned to them from the beginning of TIME by GOD. John had no memory of her but that would soon change as she brought memory after memory back to John of many prior lifetimes spent together including mistakes made which had to be rectified to set things right again. This frequently occurs with souls after death they pass through the gate of death, or perhaps during near-death experiences or deep states of meditation where they discover the facts about their karmic histories.
Lifetimes lived together over the course of centuries of human history came to John through clairvoyance and dreams. Lifetimes as a father, son, uncle, brother, lover, husband, and friend to his soulmate. He also found that he and she had also had their moments of difficulty and separation. The two did not always agree and their relationship had been strained at times. Real sacrifices had been made by John for his soulmate, and she to him, and this was a bond that had been forged by the fire and trials of life including moments in history when the world was threatening to tear itself apart. It was now the right TIME; a moment in destiny had arrived and the two were brought back together again as a blessing from GOD.
Grace revealed mysteries, truths, and facts about the spiritual worlds that only SHE could reveal to him. In support were Amanda and John's father, who also shared facts regarding their karmic histories and mission in this life. John learned, for example, that he had been a soldier over and over again throughout history and had been compelled by destiny, and by choice, away from Grace and Amanda many, many times before.
John had to break an old habit for the two of them as soulmates to evolve together. John also learned from Grace that he had been incarnated in about 600 lifetimes in physical world and that Grace and he had been connected in way or another in approximately 400 of those experiences. Amanda, as he learned, had been connected to him about 330 of those incarnations. Now, the two of them had joined forces, along with John's Dad, to help him along the path.
Additionally, John discovered that the cadences of their separate lives were interwoven in hidden ways that could observed through regular cycles connected to birth dates, death dates, obstacles, and the significant turning points of their lives which mirrored one another from one lifetime to the next. There was a very real yearning pain associated with this hole in John's heart, and Grace's, which had to be healed. Amanda and John's father were also integrated aspects of this plan.
During the remaining years of John's life, tests continued in a spiritual form of consciousness as John tinkered between the physical and spiritual worlds. During the day, he would follow his normal routine and take notes as things came to him. At night, he would observe his soulmate and his "soul" body, or body of light, interact in curious ways some of which were not understandable. Souls in the spiritual worlds sometimes have difficulty communicating with those whom they are connected while in the body, as it were. However, they also know that the best time to deliver messages to their loved ones in the physical world is during the moments of drifting to sleep and waking up. Grace, Amanda, and John's dad, and guides, would oftentimes bring messages to him in a clear audible manner during those fleeting moments.
Enumerable spiritual experiences followed, primarily in sleep, and John would be tortured and mystified by memories of things said, done, and experienced in the spiritual worlds during sleep. John's weaknesses as a human soul were quickly brought to the surface in traditional methods of testing on the path of initiation. Illusions would appear when John was vulnerable in his consciousness; can John see through the illusion? Is his lower self purified, or is he still a prisoner to his lower impulses? Can John's soul, without the direct influence of his Ego, do basic math?
Time and time again, John was disappointed and horrified to see that his "soul body", which he observed in the third person during sleep, failed basic examinations that any grade schooler could do. Yet, his guides and friends - including Grace, Amanda, and John's father - continued to press the process knowing that the path was going to be a long one.
Grace, Amanda, and his father's task was simple yet the family and John faced serious obstacles. Grace's task was to bring balance and try to heal the disturbances that had erupted in John's soul because of the disruptive outcome of the first stage of initiation which resulted in the outward manifestation of John's doppelganger; the splitting of the soul through the stimulation of the spiritual channels of the soul body during a lucid dream experience. John and his loved ones were determined to purify these wounds, some of which led to illnesses in this life, that had been accumulated over long periods of time through misdeeds, poor thoughts, behaviors, and feelings from prior lifetimes.
Having been connected to John in more times than anyone in the past, Grace volunteered to help and stay the course at all costs. The great hope was that Grace could bring her spiritual chemistry, connection, and love to heal John during a terrible crisis of the soul and reach the finish line before his death which was destined to occur many years down the road.
VIII: Soulmates & Twin souls (Alter-Egos)
And thus, John's soulmate revealed many things over the course of time including the true nature of a soulmate and what it means. In today's world, there are many misconceptions about soulmates. Most people are convinced that they married their "soulmate" while others are convinced that they have more than one. Some simply pick someone out, marry them, and then call them their "soulmate" in an immature and uninformed way. Some refuse to believe in the concept at all.
The reality is that each soul has only one soulmate in the universe and we may, in fact, be pursuing separate streams of karma which lead us away from one another for a period of time. Many times, one's soulmate is not incarnated at the same time or overlaps occur (refer to this near-death experience here, where the individual discusses the revelation of his soulmate after he died while journeying in the spiritual worlds, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLhxqy-rLh0).
The following considerations were shared regarding the reality of soulmates:
(1) Soulmates may not in every case have romantic relationships. They may have working relationships, familial relationships, friendships, or some combination thereabouts.
(2) Soulmates may not be working alongside one another or be incarnated together. They may skip an incarnation together (or more) depending on circumstances and karma. They may be separated by streams of karmic by necessity having married many different people over the course of many lifetimes. In fact, some who have learned of soulmates in near-death experiences state that most people do not incarnate with their soulmates because they need to learn about relationships from other people; not consistently be with their perfect counterpart.
(3) Each person has only ONE soul mate; not multiple people. A person may have companions, loved ones, etc. But the concept of a soul mate, in a true spiritual and karmic sense, only exists between two people. The term "soulmates" today has been misused and corrupted to suit the interests of people who would seek to rationalize things only from an outer or lofty romantic perspective. A person may, in fact, dislike their soulmate at a given point in time or it may be that one is playing a parental role. The roles change all of the time. You may not find this person in your lifetime but, more than likely, you will discover the identity of this person when one enters the spiritual worlds; either through spiritual initiation or after one passes through the gate of death. The point is, the role is not necessarily romantic and can take on many different forms.
(4) How "soulmates" exist in objective reality, from a spiritual perspective, is often at odds with how human beings dream of soulmates when they contemplate the theme. They look for a "feeling" typically based upon an appearance or a traumatic event in their lives which leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy - a fulfillment that may lead them into a dreamy fantasy of a lover's drama; a drama which is most times an illusion because people do not possess a genuine and objective spiritual vision.
(5) Some soulmates may be destined to have romantic or working relationships. Some soulmates prefer the monastic life and may work towards other goals and relationships. It all depends on the individual. The quest for all people is the attainment of higher levels of development as a free "I", or individual. We are not constrained by our soulmates nor are they by us.
When soulmates are reunited, which is not as frequent as people would like to believe with the fanciful notions of "twin flames." There is a lot of non sense floating around about soul mates and most of it is lofty romantic gibberish with no foundation in spiritual reality. However, the fact of the matter is that a kind of synthesis of working forces can be unlocked when these two spiritual partners reunite - in the right way and healthy sense - and can lead to a greater outcome or fulfillment than could otherwise be achieved. Thus, soulmates, if they are working in alignment with one another, can accomplish more if their spiritual forces and destiny align when their moment is at hand; a path designed before being born through karma from prior lifetimes.
(6) Oftentimes, there is an imbalance that exists when the soulmates are not together. It manifests in a number of ways, including anger and desperation, but soulmates tend to seek one another even if they are not aware of it. Deeds, activities, and thoughts can all be traced back to a karmic precedent, but also relationships whereby soulmates may interweave their destinies in ways that lead to separations; partings that often have sad and traumatic undertones that resonate in joyful reunions in the future.
An example of soulmates is Alexander the Great and Aristotle, and King Priam of Troy and Helen of Sparta/Troy (refer to my book Ghosts I Have Seen which is available for free on this website).
(7) Sometimes, a soul has incarnated with another soul many, many times and they have become companions; lovers, friends, family members, or professional companions. Having incarnated many times together, they formed a genuine love-bond and this gives the appearance of soulmates but they are, in fact, twin souls, or companion souls. They have spent so much time together that they become little reflections of each other and seek one another from one lifetime the next. Aristotle quoted an example of this relationship in Alexander the Great and Hephaestion; Alexander's most personal and trusted companion.
These companion souls can read each other's inner feelings and dispositions intuitively without anything being said or communicated; as is the case with soulmates. They seem to flow together without any real effort. Aristotle referred to these souls - such as Alexander and Hephastion - as alter-egos. Love, karma, and a task is the binding aspect. They also look for each other and karma draws them together repeatedly. Sometimes depression, anxiety, and a sense of loneliness can plague one who is separated from their closest companion or soulmate. The path to individuality, accountability, and freedom is the task of life. However, personal feelings can an do imprint themselves in an astral way and follow from one lifetime to the next.
IX: Dragons

The first defining moment is the conscious encounter with one's double, which can occur through meditation and or dreams in the current world age, which was described in previous chapters. During this process, when the doors open really for the first time in a person's life, they encounter divine guides - such as the Christ, angels, and even archangels - and the beings from the opposing powers. As the veil is pierced, in a conscious way, a spiritual-soul battlefield unveils itself and the candidate proceeds down the path. Seeing through illusions and objectively perceiving spiritual symbols which appear before the seeker's spiritual eyes during one's sleep state are obstacles to the path.
The goal for the seeker is to become a bridge between the physical and the spiritual worlds in an educated and informed way; thus bringing one to the gate of the spiritual world while awake. All truly inspired people; poets, writers, musicians, artists, philosophers, public speakers, or whatever the profession may be - whether they are aware of it or not - have opened pathways to the spiritual within themselves. The test for all seekers, however, is if they demonstrate a willingness to be an instrument for an altruistic mission in the world in whatever meager, or broader, way that one's karma - and calling - may lead them to.
In the ancient world, candidates for spiritual initiation would ask for the admittance into the Mysteries. In ancient Egypt, if the candidate asked three times, based on an informed decision even if they were denied and advised not to pursue it, they were granted admission to make their best effort (refer to Elizabeth Haich's book Initiation). The path cannot be undertaken without help from the spiritual worlds to guide one along the perilous path that awaits a would-be initiate.
There are limits, based on one's karma and decisions, on how far one can progress during one's life. It is up to the individual and the decision of the Christ, through Christ-Jesus as the Representative of Humanity, and one's divine guardians, or angels, who oversee and lay a path for the seeker. Doors opened, tests are administered that are purely spiritual in nature and results are objectively assessed, and a seeker is protected from pitfalls and traps that can far-reaching ramifications.
If the moment of destiny is right and it occurs in accordance with one's karma, which involves the active planning, oversight, and participation of divine leaders, colleagues, and one's spiritual family, then those souls who are closest to the seeker in terms of karmic history will make contact through spiritual means; even if one is unaware of it.
Seeing through illusions and objectively perceiving spiritual symbols which appear before the seeker's spiritual eyes during one's sleep state, and during one's normal waking life, are ongoing challenges that must be overcome. Objectively perceiving opposing beings who prefer to remain anonymous, and perceiving them correctly, can be a disturbing and challenging experience. As a seeker grows and adapts to changes within one's self, so do they. As they adapt, so must the seeker learn to stay one step ahead of them (in inner spiritual terms, not as an outer conflict in a conventional sense).
Demons primarily exist in two spheres.
First, as an expression of lower passions, instincts, and drives that lead one into selfishness, egotism, and are inherently destructive to spiritual principles. They influence people from within without direct awareness of their participation in human events. These aspects of the human being arise from within ourselves and are inherited through our Samskara; the flawed attitudes, sinful, and lowly ways of our past which have followed us into our current incarnation and have yet to be purged or purified by a deliberate change within ourselves. These can be observed, and really only through a subjective and inherently flawed way, in the attitudes, deeds, and behaviors of a person.
Second, when a seeker on the path reaches a certain stage of expanded perception, he or she becomes aware of the opposing powers as individualities that exist in a purely spiritual way and cannot be perceived through an intellectual, conceptual, or outer perspective. He or she learns of these beings through clairvoyance and perceives these individualities as real beings, especially in the manner in which they target and influence people in order to distract, polarize, and lead them away from the path.
For all intensive purposes, when viewed through the lens of materialism or an outer perspective, the opposing powers are anonymous and invisible. When one becomes more sensitive to these things, and develops a sound education on how the opposing powers work on the human being, for example through Anthroposophy, a seeker can observe these beings through clairvoyance. A continual battle becomes discernible within the human being, and the world, through an ability which is nurtured over time.

X: A Message from John's Teacher
Upon recalling, and viewing, the extent the challenges ahead which had been revealed to him through clear dreams and clairvoyance, including images of his identity in the next several lifetimes, John was taken back and tried to rationalize what he had seen.
His future lifetimes were filled with loving and tearful reunions, and parting of ways, that were too follow including his soulmate and companions. He was destined to be a man of different languages, cultures, and locations in the world including Europe, East India, the United States, and Western Europe.
John's teacher came through to him one evening through clairvoyance. His teacher, a woman in her prior lifetime, provided the following message which was one of many to come. Given John's karmic history and background, and his unique way of thinking about things, his teacher, who was a high initiate, adapted and tuned into John's thoughts. She knew how to communicate with John in a mental-spiritual way, and in a vernacular, that he understood through his own thoughts. This message was received through supersensible means.
Teacher: "Are you ready to do what move forward and the run the gauntlet, if you must?"
John: "Yes."
Here are some guidelines that we all must follow.
1. Stick with the task until the task gets done.
2. Love your brothers and your enemies.
3. If you are confronted with a life or death situation, you must seek a way through without harming anyone. Give your life if necessary, but not recklessly.
4. Give before taking.
5. Always listen carefully.
6. Don't be afraid to stand your ground.
7. Be willing to make amends.
8. Correct your errors, if you find that you make a mistake.
9. Give yourself fully to the path.
10. Love your friends and protect them always.
11. Be prudent.
12. Always honor the code.
13. Feel deeply and speak softly.
14. Give more than YOUR share.
15. Do your task with a cheerful heart.
YOU mean to us than you know. Give yourself to the task laid out for you, and remember that your life is going to change."
XI: A Message from John's Companions
One of John's closest companions and deceased relative appeared to him a dream one night, and showed him the table pictured at right.
Some days before, John had been reading about the cycles of a person's life through Anthroposophy. John's deceased relative picked up on these thoughts and approached him a dream with a table, the substance of which was communicated as an image and thought. It portrayed the success factor of John's karma, per the plan he set out to accomplish before being born, in light of lunar or moon nodes.
In light of Anthroposophy and initiation-wisdom, each human being experiences physical and spiritual changes approximately once every 7 years. During this cadences, the physical body goes through a complete change. During the course of each human being's life, a person's life is also influenced by moon, or lunar, nodes that occur once every 18.6 years.
The nights of these lunar nodes in a person's life are the most important spiritual shifts that occur during our lives. Sometimes, these changes are not perceptible. In his dream, John's life was objectively viewed from the perspective of 4 lunar nodes that occurred and would occur at 18, 36, 54, and 72 years. John was about 48 years of age at the time this dream. He was also informed that he would not live to be 72 years old to complete the 4th node in terms of years, thus "time was of the essence". He could still hit the green benchmark in the 4th node assuming that he followed the right path and things went well.
"The lunar eclipse occurs on the same date about every 18 years, and in the same constellation. There is a periodical rhythm in the lunar eclipse, a rhythm of 18 years. That is just a quarter of a cosmic day and just a quarter of a man's life. Man, if I may so express it, endures four such periods of darkness. Why? Because in the Universe everything is in numerical harmony. On the average, Man has in accordance with the rhythmic activity of his heart, not only 72 years of life, but 72 pulse beats, and approximately 18 respirations — again the quarter — in the minute. This numerical accord is expressed in the Universe by the rhythm between the 18 years." -Rudolf Steiner, Man — Hieroglyph of the Universe, GA 201, Lecture Fourteen, https://steinerlibrary.org/Lectures/201/RSP1972/Lecture_14.html
John was told that he had failed his life mission in the first two nodes, at least on average, and that he had accomplished his benchmark in the 3rd node. The success or failure of the 4th node was undetermined; thus, it was shown as neutral. If John accomplished at least most of what he set out to prior to being born, the 4th node would be green.
The specific details of John's journey, in terms of failures and successes in karmic terms, are really not important to this tale. What is important is the fact that through Anthroposophy, and a careful review and consideration of genuine initiation wisdom, which is contained in Dr. Steiner's structured and informed works, a seeker can consider life from a different and informed perspective. Doors and windows can open and a person's perspective of things has the potential to greatly expand, and with it a greater and increasing understanding of the earth, human being, and the cosmos.
Relationships with guides and companions who have passed through the gate of death is attainable and will become an important part of a person's life; if they choose to undertake such a task and think things through in a healthy and balanced way. All relationships in life, and the spiritual worlds, are mutual and reciprocal. Amazement and wonder are a part of a seeker's path, but so is accepting the fact that we are on missions in the world, of a balanced and yet karmic-spiritual nature, that are vital to a broader task.
It is a life-mission, fulfilled by one's unique calling, that each one of us must reach for to accomplish; a task that is unique to each individual within the time, environment, and form that was allotted to us for a brief moment in world and cosmic history. Moments that will never be again...
XII: Endurance
"Let's take a closer look at esoteric life. We know that various changes take place in our soul life through the exercises we received. For instance, the passions that a man had before get stronger. Old inclinations, drives and passions one thought one had overcome and put aside reemerge from the dark shafts of soul life and assert themselves vehemently.
Or an esoteric often thoughtlessly does something which he would have been ashamed of before the start of his esoteric training or wouldn't have done at all. His antipathies and sympathies for people become stronger than before; his whole soul life becomes stirred up. In short, a man gets to know what he's really like in his soul depths so that he has real self-knowledge. Therefore, strict and strong self-control is indispensable for an esoteric pupil." -Rudolf Steiner, https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA266/English/UNK1999/19120920e01.html
_______________________
The experience of John's passions that had become inflamed, and were observed, objectively through his dreams and clairvoyance were horrifying. Up to that point, he had struggled with living a rather boring life, although he had a certain temperament and vigor which sometimes got the better of him; but not as he grew older. These lower qualities became very subdued through the passage of work, life, and endurance.
The "splitting of the self" had introduced a spiritual charge into John. As a result, his astral form, or soul body, had become inflamed and irritated. He felt as if her was being stretched into directions emotionally and was forced to observe it like a scientist trying to make sense of it. Gradually, an inner soul battle emerged and intensified over the course of several years that had little, or no, outward effect on his daily life.
However, at night while he dreamed John observed the mysterious behaviors of his soul life in the third person - his soul, or light body, appeared to have its own ego which was a reflection of his Ego during the day - which manifested the lowest and the highest qualities of his soul. The two were connected, yet disparate at night. "It is divine mystery of the soul", he thought, "which I cannot reconcile no matter how much I learn." He awoke horrified at times, and felt loved, blessed, and at peace in others - as his soul acted out in response to daily activities, challenges, and the tests brought to him by companions, guides, and teachers on the other side of the grave. He was at war with himself.
John's Soul Mate, his long-time and intimate companion Amanda, and his Father were nominated, and accepted, to help him during this phase of his spiritual transformation to help during dark days to come. Oftentimes, John's companions - his soul family - simply embraced him. John noticed that every time a loved one came near to him while his soul ventured in the astral spheres at night, that their "light forces" emanated from their very beingness - their very heart of hearts - and wrapped around and through him in a truly personal way; these forces were made of pure love and warmth.
These loving encounters were constant and vital reminders of intimate relationships forged by long sojourns, sacrifices, and lifetimes in the past. They saved his life in dark moments when he thought about giving up in the depths of despair caused by surges of anger, sadness, and longing that were stimulated because of this peculiar process that had occurred in the spiritual spheres; a process which served a divine purpose beyond his mere egotism. He was now but one dot in the word surrounded by billions of souls, each of whom had their own journey and crosses to carry. Yet, he also knew that he was no less or more significant than anyone else.
Memories from the past sometimes flashed in his consciousness - both from his current lifetime and prior lifetimes - and he was forced to confront his sins, mistakes, and loves which had returned to his him. These recesses of the human soul are latent, or hidden, from the vast majority of people in the world until they are awakened and appear outwardly where they can be acknowledge and confronted in truth. This happens to every soul that passes beyond the gate of death. It is a part of what esoteric researchers and the Gods call "initiation."
It was one thing to have a dream and sleep, then awaken and forget one's dreams and simply go about the day as most people do. It was quite another to clearly and actively dream and observe his astral body berating others, and itself, in an inflamed and uncontrollable away. It was like a watching a bad horror movie and being restrained from turning the television off. He would have an otherwise normal day, then go sleep, and observe the most incomprehensible behaviors come out of his soul life. Some nights were fine and otherwise quiet. Others, were difficult. Meditation, prayer, and firm control of his thoughts, and feelings, was the only thing that enabled to survive.
Always, however, was his soulmate. His companion, Amanda, was also there and his deceased relative; someone he had known "since the beginning of time." They provided their perpetual help, and guidance, to John's astral form each night and they patiently accompanied it, and kept it under controlled conditions, so that it did not insult, berate, and "flash" its emotions; a strange quality that he possessed. His astral form would say and do things that simply did not make any sense. Thus, they kept him under close observation.
John had made this request at one point, as he recognized early on that he astral form was becoming overly sensitive to the most insignificant of things;
"...please, keep it tied up in a cage if you have to, but do not let it disturb anyone on the astral plane while I am asleep."
His soulmate was truly an angelic personality. She did not appear to have any lower aspects; she was radiant, beautiful, light-filled, gentle, and active. During her life, she was praised by all who knew her as a truly kind, gentle, and good person. She loved John, and it showed. She often patiently gave him news, and ideas, to keep his spirits up while he dreamed knowing what he was going through.
John often awoke with his favorite song, or idea, in his mind based on books, movies, or ideals that were spinning throughout his soul life and he was partial to. She would often "imprint" her image on to his consciousness just before awaking or provide a message to ensure that he knew she was there.
The souls of the deceased can easily observe everything that a living person has done, thought, and felt during the day. Even movies, books, and shows that a person watches on television echo and are visible in the astral form of a person while we sleep. Thus, souls on the other side of the grave are aware of our innermost secrets, ideas, desires, our true character, and tendencies and can read and respond to them. Feelings, and forces of the soul, radiate outwardly when a person enters the spiritual worlds during meditation, sleep, and after death. During waking life, we are all a part of the spiritual worlds as well; thus what one feels, expresses, and does also radiates throughout the spiritual worlds; it becomes visible when one pierces the veil consciously.
XII: Endurance
-“We do not dip twice into the same wave; we are and we are not.” -Attributed to Heraclitus or Cratylus
The revelation of John's past lives, prior to becoming "John," occurred gradually over the course of his lifetime through dreams, visions, and an inherited form of clairvoyance that he carried within him. He did not discuss these things with most people although he tried on occasion accepting the fact that in today's world the hard shell of materialism can cause fear, paranoia, and misunderstanding.
The West has been, in fact, conditioned by centuries of religious dogma which has been purged many essential universal truths, and an over-reliance on what can be observed through hard science. The living principle of reincarnation is more accepted in the East but not in the West where it is viewed as heretical; and justifiably so for one who is truly objective having not pierced the veil or looked for the deeper answers to things on the PATH.
Over time, John accumulated a plethora of memories resurrected within him through the events of life, seeking, and looking for the answers. Sometimes, visions would manifest of clear image-pictures of prior events. Other times, John would receive softer indications that would compel him to study or research an area of history, past-lives, near-death experiences, or a similar topic. John discovered that every person with whom he had come into contact - for better or worse - in his lifetime were interwoven with his destiny, and he with theirs, throughout human history. At a high level, this experience carries a certain feeling. However, once the finer details emerge, accompanied by striving, conflicts, loves, and painful separations, a reconciliation of the past is a necessary challenge that must be faced.
At long last, after many years, John decided to face his demons by journeying physically to some of the places where he had once lived. Through dreams, clairvoyance, and traditional research, John was able to trace specific dates, locations, and even names of people with whom he had been once intimately connected. He was able to determine some, but not all, of the locations and dates of the births and deaths of prior lifetimes; himself, wives, children, parents, lovers, and friends.
John also visited forgotten battlefields now lost the passage of time where, a long time ago, the future of humanity was decided in furious combat and tests of endurance. These lands were now marked by monuments and cemeteries - where once upon a time thousands of men had engaged in furious life and death struggles at turning points of history. Many died and, in light of the facts of human existence, were reborn to continue their destinies across the world. The quiet and peaceful nature of these battlefields in strange places - once characterized by immeasurable violence, hatred, pollution, destruction, and noise - were perhaps the most difficult thing to overcome in his journey. His soul often resonated with the heartfelt pang of yearning and sorrow; these souls and the battles fought must not be forgotten.
Always, when those moments approached where he felt the downward pull of sadness and pain, he remembered the words of his spiritual teacher; "you will be okay, as long as you let go of the past."
The startling revelation of the strands of destiny, and how these threads manifests in the lives of people, sometimes in infinitesimal ways, which brings them together and separates them again, can be daunting and frightening. It is one's SIN from the past that manifests. All seekers believe they are largely perfect until they confront the Guardian of the Threshold and, or, the Doppelganger is made manifest reminding the seeker always of his or her imperfections which must be overcome.
As he retraced his footsteps, John simply could reconcile how and why he "leapt" from one region, and one form, to another over time. John was forced to conclude that the stream of activity that compelled his personal and professional relationships did not follow any traditional form of traditional logic. The path of karma and destiny (including lives which are yet to be fulfilled), and how it manifested and led people on different life-missions throughout the world over time, did not appear to be connected on the surface. it became painfully obvious that these paths and relationships and how they manifested in families, friendships, one's physical form, goals, and the pivotal events of life were cultivated and planned for human beings as a gift from the Divine.
What was, perhaps, most startling to John was the reality that there were a handful of souls who had returned to assist him on the quest in this lifetime with whom he had not known during his current incarnation. There was a necessary leap and separation that was compelled and destined to occur for reasons of Providence and the individual path of the human soul over time. These were people whom had been intimately connected, desperately loved - and sometimes lost - and at times at come into conflict with in past lifetimes which compelled them, and he, down different paths.
That personal revelation, and the direct involvement on his life-path by way of the spiritual worlds of these individuals with whom he considered his closest family members. The separation from these souls who had passed through the gate of death, as far as John could discern, beyond all others was something that cast an arrow into his heart as he walked the path alone. After all, these individual lived in different parts of the world during their lives.
Just like himself, these individuals had families, careers, challenges, successes, and failures that he had not been a direct part of and yet, at a spiritual level, he observed that was connected to them. This was self-evident in the many visions he had of future lifetimes where these individuals would be close to him again and again as they had been in the past as wives, daughters, sons, brothers, mothers, aunts, friends, and family members. Unlike John, who glimpsed at an enduring bridge between this world and the next, these souls had passed through the gate of death and the pain of transformation where all achieve some degree of spiritual initiation or that soul-expansion into the cosmos and the spiritual spheres- where reunion with the Divine Beings including our Creator - that accompanies every soul who crosses the rainbow bridge.
His flaws were exposed every night in dreams by his spiritual family; biases, flawed thoughts and feelings, and seemingly insignificant decision were closely examined. John often felt as if here more flawed than ever and blundered about at times as he tried to find his way. He had been deconstructed, and each nuance was observed and studied in an effort to help him transform and correct his flaws. It was invasive, personal, and upsetting at times.
The reality was that John had spiritual benchmarks to achieve, in spiritual terms, and he had to meet them in order for the future, and the future of his loved ones who were depending upon his progress on the path the necessary transformations yet to come. He looked back not just upon the past and mistakes made, where genuine sacrifices were made again and again by himself and others, but he was compelled to look forward seeing that there was many sacrifices yet to come.
Having lived this life, John was well aware that spiritual amnesia was a part of the path of reincarnation and that his own "I" would be destined to be transformed into some other "I." Would he be a good person in the future? Would he vanquish the flaws in his disposition that were destined to carry forward as his consciousness was transformed alongside his loved ones with the great moment of rebirth dawned and they were destined to return together to the physical world?
It is long standing habits, dispositions, and the core soul qualities that continue from one lifetime to the next. Names change, races change, languages change, and forms change. on the path, one has no choice but to proceed forward in full faith. "Trust in God and trust in the Divine who watch over us from one lifetime to the next." But the nightmares, the fears, the constant worry, and the lingering sense of the unknown of his OWN flawed individuality which he had carried within him, and had been utterly exposed during his first steps in to the spheres of initiation, terrified him. Acceptance, activity, and letting go were necessary obstacles that had to be overcome.
XIII: The Miracle and Mystery of Personality
The reality is that while one progresses from one lifetime to the next, and our soul carries within it the same "stuff" over time, there is a deep mystery involved with regards to how, and why, the "I" of a human soul changes and evolves over time. Why does one not remember their past lifetimes automatically? The reality is that we can hardly remember most of the events, thoughts, and feelings of our lives except for those were transformative or important to our lives. We must turn back to the past, consciously, and find a path to remembrance. The more that one pursues this path, from one lifetime to the next, and raises one's consciousness in spiritual terms, the more that one will remember their prior incarnations.
The "I", out of necessity, passes through a process in the spiritual worlds prior to rebirth whereby an individual, out of necessity, is reformed carrying all of the good, bad, habits, dispositions, and SOUL-MISSION, upon which it is intended to accomplish certain tasks on the path of spiritual evolution. Anthroposophy teach us that in order to remember our past lives, we must find a path to do so and teach ourselves to look back and upwards. Consider the eternal, it says. Consider that all things are destined to evolve and that each person carries a cross of some kind - male of female - in the world.
Lives end early through chance, disease, and trauma. Some persons live long healthy lives. Some are born ill or suffer from impediments that can never be overcome, while others are born with the door of opportunity at their doorstep. A seeker - enabled by objective and a reasonable mind - will consider and accept the fact that there is a tertiary task at work upon which life continues and evolves eternally and that each INDIVIDUAL has a unique life-plan connected to the other individuals, the world, and the cosmos. We are only here for a time, then we move on. Others, in turn, are constantly being reborn and the world continues.
Turning back to the events of the prior day, and the day before that, in as much detail as possible and replaying those events will enable a kind of spiritual memory to develop. This will enable our memory to develop and, eventually, our consciousness will be guided to the answers. The "I", or when a soul can say "I", manifests in us as individuals around the age of 4. Before that, a child is cognizant of an "I."
XIV: Letting Go
"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart." -Carl Jung
This fundamental truth comes to its greatest apogee, perhaps, when one attains a glimpse into one's past lives. History, and the trail of one's life before being born, becomes a very personal affair.
Over the course of John's life, he experienced repeated visions, dreams, and flashbacks to prior lifetimes. Not just one, but several lifetimes appeared before him, brought upon by the moments of his life, relationships, his age, and the ideas and information that he allowed to enter his consciousness. Topics that consisted of genuine spiritual facts and ideas, such as reincarnation, somehow triggered a response in his soul and eventually, bit by bit, a detail here and there emerged through his consciousness about his own past lifetimes and the nature of his soul. These flashbacks would occur oftentimes unexpectedly.
Guides, and helpers, from the other side of the grave were instrumental in bringing details and information forward, and he often saw things emerge with the help of a divine helper; sometimes even the Representative of Humanity, Christ-Jesus (Dr. Steiner observed that sometimes people mistake an encounter with their guardian angel as God or Jesus), who appeared to John in visions and dreams and revealed things about his past and his inner self.
Moments from prior lifetimes that sometimes appeared as mundane on the surface, were karmically linked to moments, decisions, and encounters in his current lifetime. John kept most of his visions and revelations personal and concealed except to those whom he knew would understand and he could trust. He learned, however, to keep things concealed from everyone else.
After the passing of a loved one, things were expedited, brought upon by his karma and the quest of a deceased and helpful companion. "Time is of the essence", and "go forward at all costs", he heard from a divine helper. He experienced several pivotal lifetimes he had led through meditation and dreams over the course of several years.
Wars, past loves, families and children long gone, events, people (both helpful and challenging), and pivotal moments in history that he had lived through, flashed before his consciousness. Many times, the identity of a person from the past would be connected to someone he knew in the present. Yet the moment for him, in those lifetimes and countries, had long since faded. Yet, somehow, the embers of those memories burned within him as living things. They were a part of the universe and a part of his soul, forever. The life that one gives to his or memories, whether they be of past lives or the current one, can be constructive or destructive. Thus, one must proceed down the path in a mature and balanced way. One must learn to stay grounded.
Within these memories, John's soulmate and two dearest companions were integral. They appeared over and over again as a kind of spiritual family. They had played vital roles in his prior lifetimes and they were with him now. They were vital and interwoven with his karma both from the past and into the foreseeable future.
Was this an aspect of what the initiates who wrote about it called "spiritual initiation"? Did it happen all at once or was it spread out over the course of time? Perhaps it was unique to each individual...
John accepted the flashes and memories of these prior lifetimes as his own and painful memories, including sacrifices made, and residual memories of harm done to others, and by others to himself, emerged. Intuitively, John knew that he was the person he had seen in his visions and dreams in different names, and forms, over the course of many millennia. He was not being misled. This intuitive knowing is a kind of inner affirmation, and, at times, a guide would reaffirm the facts of things in dreams, visions, and clairvoyance in a manner such as "you ARE this person" and "WHY is it not possible?" These flashbacks, at times, carried within them deep emotions. How these experiences had shaped themselves into neuroses in his current lifetime (from the Jungian perspective), and dispositions, became clearer.
John fell back into a kind of personal shell, at times, and looked for a place to hide but there was none. He would only be hiding from himself. For the revelation, and the battle, of his soul was raging within and others were deliberately pulling the deepest aspects of his soul out, so that he could he observe and conquer them. The image of St. George slaying the dragon became a very apt and important personal symbol for John as it is for all who embark on the seeker's path.
Questions emerged. "If I am destined to forget, why be reborn in the first place?" "Why should I be born, and then forget, and then continue to be reborn over and over again?" For those who consider themselves philosophers, the question can be answered and explored in any number of ways. When it becomes personal, however, the question takes on new and even tragic meaning. One must carefully consider and remember certain immutable facts, as pillars, that are revealed through initiation-wisdom about the true meaning of a divine process that is governed, and managed, by a vast choir of higher beings including angels, archangels, archai, and the Christ.
John thought, for a time, about going back on a promise that he had made to "continue forward at all costs", yet he could never let his loved ones down. He could not forsake the friendships and living souls who had crossed the plane of death, and had returned to help John while he was alive on the physical plane.
His dearest loved ones were dedicating their time, and resources, to guide John to some personal spiritual benchmark; some kind of a goal. But he did not know what it was. He simply continued forward and watched his dreams, in amazement and in disgust, as situations and activities emerged that he could not comprehend. Only time, research, and contemplation would yield some of the answers. Guilt-ridden and often ashamed, the emotional pain that emerged out of the experiences of his clear dreams became a necessary burden that he had to bear alone.
Regardless of his personal feelings, which were important to his spiritual friends, he knew that he had to go forward and "take it". He knew that he would die one day, and that he would be reunited with his loved ones in full rational consciousness, and that he would have to give an accounting of himself in truth - for there are no lies in the spiritual worlds when one reviews one's life, thoughts, and deeds - that he did the best he could with the time that he had, given what he could perceive and understand. With knowledge comes great responsibility. People have to try...
The bridge had been opened and was not going to close, nor was his obligation. Promises had been made, solemn oaths were taken, and a destiny was to be fulfilled. The promise was to take up the task of initiation, and help those who were counting on him no matter what challenges emerged, which was destined and planned to occur over the course of several lifetimes.
His one and only soulmate in the entire universe - for although we may have dearest loved ones and companions, each person has only one true soulmate - who had been separated from him for at least 1 lifetime, was continually present in his dream and spiritual life. Her memory and the good life that she had led, was viewed by John as inspiring, compelling, and yet difficult to bear. Like others who have encountered the Lesser Guardian of the Threshold for the first time, they find that they are actually lowly and undeveloped creatures with many issues...
Tears fell on occasion. Confusing dreams and even nightmares followed for years on end. His divine companions, all of whom had crossed the plane of death in the past, approached him in dreams and seemed to be digging into his subconscious using tools and strategies. They would often do something that provoke a dreadful emotional response and John would awaken terrified, and concerned, at what he had observed in his soul, or astral, body of light during his dream life. He often observed these behaviors in the third person as an observer.
Each day as John awoke, some new aspect, higher and lower, emerged as a vision, or feeling, and he was forced to confront it. He was told through clairvoyance and dreams: "...that which is confronted consciously can be purged and transformed. If it remains concealed in the soul or the subconscious, it subsists as a hidden danger that can, and almost always does, reappear in future lifetimes" (this quote can also be found in the works of Carl Jung). Clearly, then, they were trying to head off a future risk and help him.
John became accustomed to watching for messages while awake that appeared often through books and the media; he found that reading certain works, and allowing his intuition to guide him to certain books, often led him to the answers to questions that he had. Sometimes, he would pull a book off the shelf and pick a page randomly and fitting thoughts, an ideas, often emerged. Were these impulses planted within him the prior night's dreaming through his spiritual interactions and came to life within him as ideas and an inner compass?
John found that reading through spiritual/initiation material, such as the Rudolf Steiner Archives or the Edgar Cayce readings, for example, and rereading books that had been helpful to him often led him to answers and inner reconciliations. Thus, he learned to listen to HIS intuition, and the advice of his companions and guides who were helping John through his soul-life, or subconscious, knowing that their destinies were interwoven with his...and who knows how many others? Who knows, with certainty, what the future will bring?
Shock waves occasionally arose in his heart from out of nowhere. There were many things occurring in his soul life, especially during his dreams while his soul and "I" were on the astral plane, and he frequently felt like he was on a magic carpet ride...
The emotions, and connections, associated with the visions of the past, present, and future defied what he conceived of as possible. The constraints of materialism hit regularly below the belt and yet acted as a kind of balancer; how could it be? Are you sure that it is so? Where does one draw the line?
In the face of unsolvable questions, John decided to put his best foot forward. He accepted the fact that he had been given a view of his prior and future lifetimes and that an entire sequence of his future incarnations had been planned. They were revealed to him through visions and clear dreams. His soulmate, and dearest companions, were there with him, supporting and helping the best that they could. So were the visions of the future; experiences, families, jobs, loves, joyful moments, and sacrifices yet to be fulfilled...
How to reconcile all of these things? How does one not get lost?
John's divine messenger, a teacher, approached him in a dream one night where he was given some very sound advice; "...you will be okay, as long as you let go of the past..."
Thus, John discovered that the only way he was going to survive the future was to let go of the past and accept it and move forward. A past that he was intimately connected to, and regretted in countless ways as the person that he was today, yet existed no longer. The past was going to fulfilled in the future. He had to deal with the reality of his karma and the mistakes and successes of his past lives which were carried forward within him as dispositions, appearances, challenges, and decisions.
